Im in the market for a new PC - trouble is that by this time next year I hope to have my first house with my GF so this will be my last big spend for some years to come

I want a PC which will at least last me two years without a need for upgrades and then after than be easily upgradable after that

With that in mind im after PCI-E, SATA and Wireless

Have spent great deal of time looking and best I can come up with is this

Sony CD recorder 52x/32x/52x IDE black
Norman Internet Control, 1 year license
    PC box
    SoftThinks Installation/Recovery
    Gigabyte GA-K8NF-9,nForce4-4x,Socket-939
    AMD Athlon 64 3200+ 2.0GHz Socket 939,
    2 x Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 120GB S-ATA

    Cooler Master Centurion Case Black
    Fortron/Source Powersupply ATX-400W
    TwinMOS PC3200 DDR-DIMM 1024MB Dual Pack
    Microsoft Windows XP Home SP2
    XFX GeForce 6600GT 128MB GDDR3
    CNet Wireless-G PCI 54 Mbps 802.11g,
Sony Floppy Drive, 3,5" 1,44MB Black
    CNet Wireless-G PCI 54 Mbps 802.11g,

its just under £750 and I have a budget of £800

    so how does it look

Its from Komplett using there system builder

If you are looking to build a quiet PC (given you are on an av forum) I would avoid the Gigabyte boards as they have a power supply daughter board with yet another fan to make noise (I think). Also my last Gigabyte board failed so I have been put off. Why not get an Asus A8N Sli like mine, it's fab and SLi upgradeable.

Again for quietness, consider Samsung Spinpoint hard drives.

And for a silent graphics card there is the Gigabyte GV NX66T128VP.

Surprised you dont have a DVD burner in there!?

    Hi Duncan,

It looks like a good pc, but not obviously a HTPC - what will you be using it for?

sorry - is this HCPC only ?

im just after a gaming \ home PC system - not concerned about it being silent etc - just quiet(ish)

I just need a system to give me best bang per buck and at least last me 2 years (and then be easily upgradable)

im not interested in self build either

oh and I have an NEC Burner and SB Audigy 2 already so would just pop them in

    any opinions though are welcome

Duncan, no I don't think this is HCPC only, just if people are posting on AV forums then Music and Video are usually a big part of what they want, and I was banging on about fans because they are a real distraction especially during quiet passages of films, they make me miss dialogue and the missus doesnt like too much volume anyway :nono: .

sorry mate - did not mean answer to sound curt

    sorry

as long as the PC is fairly unobtrusive then thats fine - its not going to be used for films (at least no plans to)

Those MEDION pc's they sell at Aldi always seem to have a super spec for the price - the latest one I saw has a P4 with 64 bit enhancements (P4 640?) for about your money.

Dunno about quality/ whether anyone has had a bad experience with one.

My fault - The forum is called Entertainment PC's, and Computer Hardware, I thought it meant HTPC..... I just read the first part of the title!

I'd love an answer to this as well. Can't find a socket 939 3500+ that also has SPDIF in as well?

Ideally I want SATA, Gig Lan, PCI-E, SPDIF in & out any suggestions?

The 3500 comes out just on top against the P4 3.2

Obviously the P4 wins a few tests but overall the 3500 is a faster chip, you also get the advantage of AMD Cool N Quiet which is great for HCPC use

    oh god this gets harder

was about to order the system from komplett when I saw the Matrix Fireblade TRX from mesh

Ok it may work out at a little over a grand but the spec seems awesome

although would have to add few quid for wireless card

just wish i could get it for around £800

The new Venice Athlon 64's are out Monday with SSE3 and an improved memory controller, they should be the same price as the winchester once stock comes in everywhere.

For your upgrade I would go for XP pro not home - XP home will not support the second core on the dual core cpus that will be standard by then.

Crucial ballistix PC3200 seems to be the cheapest CAS2 memory if that is what you are after. 2x512 is c.£130 direct from them.

eh ? so there is a new chip coming out this week ?

So best to wait a wekk and hope that (a) price of this syetm drops or (b) get new processor with it

oh and one last thing - which would perform the best - the 2 cards as above or a single 256MB ATI Radeon X800 XL

duncan, I may be missing something here but having to graphics cards is only useful if you want to connect 2 monitors, so its not a case of would 2 128mb card perfom better than a 256mb card, its if you need to cards at all.

the 2 graphics cards are in sli so although not as powerul as two cards combined - they are more powerful (when used) than just 1 card
