What do you think of the Destiny DLC strategy?

I'm curious on the perspective on this from proper Destiny players, I played for a while on launch but the grind/ random loot drop and late game content meant I faded away pretty fast so I never got drawn into buying any of the DLC, every time one came out I would check it out and didn't really see fantastic value in the content on offer for me personally.

The Taken King looks like a sizeable expansion but is priced pretty high at £40 (lets not even talk about the conversion rate issue), plus there is an edition which includes the entire game including all the DLC released up until this point for just £15 more. Plus if you want all the content you have to basically re buy everything for £75, granted it's just dance emotes but still it's got to be irritating for the die hards?

My question is do you care? Back when COD was at it's height Activision basically had unlimited access to my wallet with map packs, but from over here it looks almost as if Destiny has been designed to extract time and money from you, from a pound/time ratio you may argue that Destiny is good value but is that because it forces you to throw so much time at it for rewards? do you feel like you have got good value from Destiny, Will you be buying the new expansion, should it have been included in the season pass, any one rebuying just for dance emotes?

As I just posted on the PS4 side, I'll repost my view here....

Frankly there is little about Destiny that isn't shameful.

    A shameful lack of content.

A shameful cost for the first DLC that actually added very little.

    Shameful comments from Bungie.

Shameful exclusivity deal that meant some gamers paid the same price for less content.

And now a ridiculous "full game" price for what they describe as a "significant add on", still with 3 or 4 times less content than the full game.

I was hooked into it for months. I'm glad I drifted away though because as addictive as the game was, even within it I could see that essentially it was a massive rip off and Bungie were extracting the urine at every opportunity. It is a shame because the game mechanics were great but Bungie clearly see Destiny as a service rather than a game. Which is fine but you can't charge game level prices for updates to a service....

I'm really not that bothered TBH. The price of the DLC alone is a bit high when compared to the Legendary Edition, but I think that the pricing of that is spot on. The standalone DLC needed to be priced at somewhere around the £25 to £30 range and I think most people would have been happy.

I don't know why but the original price of TTK was 27.99 on the Xbox store but it only lasted a day. I think this is a fair price but 40 (full game price) is a bit steep.

That being said, I have lost count of the games I have paid full price for and played for a few hours before losing interest. At least I get value for money out of Destiny.

Value for money has been fantastic so far.

I don't bemoan the lack of content. With an online game where you play with others this is a different proposition I think. Especially with crucible and the iron banner.

What does annoy the hell out of me is the need to rebuy content with the collectors edition to get the new dance moves. They need to make this available to all players. Preferably free of charge to those who have owned the game since the start and put serious hours in.

    1) I think £40 is too expensive for the DLC (not sure how true but some rumers suggests some of it will just be doing current content backwards!)

2)I don't agree with the 'Collector Editions' with exclusive content, it shouldn't be any different than if you have bought all the previous game/DLC and are buying this individually. I understand this weeks daily update from DeeJ will have some info/clarification on this.

I pretty much agree with all of this...........but I'm still hooked on it. For a while there I thought they'd learned their lesson on pricing when The Taken King went up on XBox Live at £27.99. For a rumoured 12 missions, 4 strikes, new multiplayer maps and a raid to me that's about right. The £20 asking price for the first two DLCs was ludicrous for the amount of content they gave.

Personally I don't think the exclusive content the PS4 lot have got has worked in anyone's favour, including theirs. If I'm correct (and I may be wrong), then the extra strike they have doesn't feature in the weekly or nightfall strikes at all, as they're unified across the platforms. As such, that content would be good to play initially, but then when you can't get any decent rewards doing it I'd think they stop playing it. Best thing for them will be when the period of exclusivity ends and it features in the end game rotation. The extra guns they got were good for them, but there's only really the Hawkmoon that's supposed to be any good. Exclusive content for two or three months, fine, a year does nobody any good.

I thought the £40 was the full game Inc dlc so far and the new stuff. Could be wrong but they are definatley putting out a complete version

Ok, none of will need the bonus XP thingy and the quest will probably be something along the lines of collect 10,000 red bull cans from Fallen Dregs... ;)

"We're excellent value for money, so quit moaning"

"You will want to throw your money at us when you see the new content"

It really didn't come across very well at all, but is definitely worth a read!

EDIT: A bit of the interview taken from elsewhere

Eurogamer: Final question on prices -

Luke Smith: Is it also the final question on the emotes?

Eurogamer: I’m not going to mention them again. I can’t get them.

Luke Smith: But you can if you buy the Collector’s Edition.

Eurogamer: I’m not going to buy the game and the two DLCs all over again.

Luke Smith: Okay, but first I want to poke at you on this a little bit.

    Eurogamer: Poke at me?

Luke Smith: You’re feeling anxious because you want this exclusive content but you don’t know yet how much you want it. The notion of spending this money is making you anxious, I can see it -

Eurogamer: I do want them. I would buy them -

Luke Smith: If I fired up a video right now and showed you the emotes you would throw money at the screen.

Eurogamer: What I’m saying is that fan frustration is not because they don’t understand the proposition. It comes regardless of how cool the exclusive content is. The frustration - and mine as a fan - is that the method of acquiring it requires me to re-buy content I bought a year ago.

Luke Smith: [Long pause] It’s about value. The player’s assessment of the value of the content.

For me, £40 is a lot for DLC. I don't care if Bungie don't like that label, that's what it is.

At £30 we would have been getting a better deal, based on the £20 each cost for the other two or £35 if bought together, and Activision would still be making a profit. It's not like they haven't made a lot of money from this product already. At £30, I doubt there would be as much furore about this DLC either.

The problem is, despite the grind Destiny is the most fun I've had playing with people online in a long time and that's where they've got you. I imagine a lot of our online friends will buy it, which reinforces the price they are charging, and then you're left with little choice if you want to continue that fun experience.

Don't forget the 10 year plan. In a year we will have already been charged for the base game, two expansions that see us running backwards through the base game and now a new area. How much is Destiny going to have cost by the end.

You're only going to buy this standalone DLC if you're REALLY into the game though. I've racked up around 600 hours on Destiny since launch. I spent £84.99 on the digital guardian edition and I've now pre-ordered The Taken King at £27.99. Now I'll get a lot of hours out of the taken king as well, but I'm not factoring those in here, the cost per hour of entertainment Destiny has given me is 19p an hour. Even if I was paying the £40 price for the new DLC it'd still only be 21p an hour.

We all know the Destiny model now. Lots of endgame grinding, not so much content. We should all know what we're getting here, so if you pay the price you're willing, if you don't like the model then don't buy. Is that right? Not sure. Should we not buy so Bungie learn their lesson and put a lot more content into Destiny 2? Quite probably. Am I paying £27.99 so I can romp around with a solar hammer in a new raid........you're damn right I am :rotfl:

It's a North America exclusive only, the extra xp would of been nice for the levelling up the sub class.

Dont forget you can also now buy the CE emotes/shaders etc if your a year one player and buy the TTK for £40 for another £20. (Extrapolating from $=£ as usual)

The Dark Below and House of Wolves were £20 each, so how do a few cosmetic items equate to being worth the same cost as campaign and multiplayer content.
