I have noticed looking through some of the pictures of peoples excellent home cinemas, that people have their sub placed on some sort of platform or what looks like slate or marble!

    is this to improve sound?

Theres a product called an Auralex Gramma Isolation Platform that as suggested by the name isolates the sub from the surrounding environment, useful for people looking to restrict vibrations to say neighbours or it can also improve the sound depending on the type of flooring they have (e.g concrete flooring might see negligible improvement whereas a suspend wooden flooring which has certain resonant frequencies could see a huge improvement).

The effect of the Gramma can also be replicated (cheaply) by using marble/paving slabs as this 'tightens' up the bass on susceptible flooring for the above reason.

One of them is on a Gramma (as explained above by rOAdeh) and the other is on Aurolex MoPads. (Which are pieces of the same material used in the Gramma for sound isolation).

Quite the opposite, I have spikes in my sub linking through the carpet to our concrete floor with a slab of 1" granite on top of the sub to weight it all down to keep it in contact the floor.

Soundcare Superspikes under my subs, supposed to attenuate sound transmission to the neigbours, they did tighten and increase the output of my subs a bit...
