I can name 2 DVD's off the top of my head where the .1 LFE channel is so over the top it's just not funny. Independence Day and Hulk. There are probably loads more but those 2 spring to mind...

Now, I watched Pirates Of The caribbean (R2) last night. The soundtrack (DD 5.1) was probably the best I have heard this year bar X men 2. The bass was absolutly spot on. No boom. Tight and fast.

On the 2 discs I mentioned above, the LFE .1 channel is so overblown, I would call it boom, not bass.

So what do you do if you come accross one of these discs? Grin and bear it and hope the household insurance covers structral damage? Or do you do the right thing and turn down the LFE channel? IMO, it's the right thing to do but at the same time should not be necessary. The.1 LFE channel should be standard accross the board...

I have found it hard to calibrate my sub woofer levels, so I'm always fiddeling about with the levels when I'm watching films.

It's hard to navigate to my amps LFE level settigs using the remote, so I end up getting up and down from the sofa to adjust the output level nob on the back of the sub.

What I really need is a sub woofer that has its own remote.

Sadly I just have to hit the volume down with neighbours to deal with.

I have also found some titles with over the top LFE usage. Only thing i do is turn down the LFE channel via the amp (currently set to -4 on my AX-630SE). This doesent affect the subs handling of normal bass, which is quite useful.

It would be interesting (if a little dangerous) to hear some of the sounds for real, that are usually emphasized by LFE - earthquakes, explosions, rumblings etc, just to compare.:)

Daylight has also got some over-powering bass though I think it's deliberate - with these type of soundtracks I just decrease the gain of my sub a notch.

But at what point does "over the top bass" become boom? I would suggest that the point is when the bass just takes over everything...like the opening scene in ID4 when the saucer comes from back to front. The bass there is so excessive, it's stupid. IMHO, if I leave my settings as they are, I actually fear for the safety of my sub when listening to some of these films.
There's not many to complain about, but these 2 are defo on the list...ID4 was just as bad on laserdisc as well IIRC.

Well i guess an example i could use would be Brotherhood of the Wolf, the bass is so over the top to whats actually happening onscreen but it sounds fabulous, there are some films where it is a lil overwhelming for my subwoofer, The Haunting DTS edition comes to mind, although i love the bass in that film.

Can't do it on DTS, but on some films with excessive bass I just use Dolby Digitals DRC, and set it to medium. It takes the edge of it without effecting the overall balance.

I always donate all excess bass to my neighbours. Afterall, I don't need it. I'm generous and thoughtful in that way.

I find levels on DVDs variable to say the least...and it's not just sub levels. Even after calibration on some films I find the dialogue almost inaudible, and have to increase the centre channel 3 or 4 db. As for sub levels, on some films I can be up and down a couple of times during a movie, simply because it goes waaaay over the top, and as AB says it becomes 'boomy'. I tend to watch films in DD with 50% dynamic compression. Even with the reduced dynamic range the sub can be OTT.

Watching Attack of the Clones (R1) last night I found the bass just too much. Episode 1 had much better sound IMHO. The bass in Ep2 is just too boomy for my liking, but I don't adjust the sub 'cause I couldn't be ar*ed for 1 film.

I don't know if one of these would help but since I added one to my setup I've never had to adjust sub levels.
Prior to using it, certain frequencies boomed & as a result I'd have to reduce the the overall sub volume.

    Cheers, Paul
