Richer sounds have run out of Panny 5s but have got the display model which they will let me have for £2400 (aparently been on demo for 3 months). It's either that or a new in box virgin Hitachi PMA400. They have offered me a full refund/exchange against my faulty LG panel at £2500 and I simply can't stretch to the £3k they want for the Panny 6.

So come on guys give me your opinion.

Beat them up on the panny price, and you can check the hours onthe panny panel, make sure they're not pulling any dodgy parts of your anatomy! It's in the 'service menu info' thread at the top.

IMOH, Id be reluctant to go for any shop floor display model. Its no doubt being run in Torch mode, hence 3 months demo use could vary depending on which phosphors you asked !. May be hold out and save a little longer for Panny 6 (easier said than done......)

Either screen will be an improvement over the LG - I would prefer to go with a new screen over a shop soiled one - especially given the burn in issues with Plasma's.

Well screen burn should be obvious, like if they've left a dvd menu on it or something, and TBH I can't think of any other problems that you'd notice caused by lack of care. As long as it is just 3 months, and it's not been left on forthe entire time it'll be fine. They're tougher than you think. How many hours in 3 months?

Be very careful with display models from Richer Sounds...

Only last weekend I stumbled past the local shop at 2am on a Saturday night and they had left a LG plasma running in the window.

    Do the math - 24 x 31 x 3 = 2,232 hours.

I was a little too drink to comment on the picture quality though!:p

Exactly, and if it's anywhere near that figure he'll know it's been ran 24/7 for 3 months!

Don't touch it would be my advice!

I've dealt with a lot of used plasmas, fear them not! B*** all goes wrong that isn't obvious, I'd have a go at getting them to throw in some warranty, and a written assurance that it's UK stock if that's what they say it is. Plasma has a 1/2 life of 30-35000 hours, what's a thousand or so?

Quite alot in pounds sterling from wallet  . £2400 is quite alot of cash, I personally would not part with it for an ex-demo shopfloor plasma panel.

thanks guys I knew it would spark a debate.

The way I look at it is if I'd bought a Panny 5 in January when I bought my LG it would have at least 1000 hours on it by now and would have cost me £3000 so if I get it now for £2400 and can negotiate an extended warranty as part of the deal then I'm onto a winner (the extra £100 refund is almost enough for my JS RGB converter!!!).

If I bought the Panny 6 it wouldn't just be saving up the extra £500 to buy it but the £6500 or so in matrimonial divorce legal fees and subsequent bedsit living whilst watching my estranged better half live it up and flaunt the last of her misplaced youth on trying to bag a toyboy!!!!

MAW thanks for the tip on the time clock much apreciated hadn't thought of it.

get them price match you the 6. they have a list on online retailers they will price match. consider getting their 3yr protection with 50% buy back option (i think it's 300 for plasmas, tis a bargain especially considering the option)

Been down to Richer Sounds they had lost the remote but managed to find it so it's been run on the following

    Contrast 19

Brightness 0 (and every other setting 0)

    Total running hours 712

    Can't see any screen burn

Looks as though they will do it for £2400 with extended warranty so I reckon it aint bad.

No marks or scratches it's the uk model and has an RCA terminal board.

Anyone have any further comments before I go for it?

Get that UK bit in writing, check the model no. on th ID plate. It should say TH42PW5B-X If it says E-X it's european. ID plate is on the back near the terminal board. You'll want more discount or threaten trading standards if it's euro and they say UK

Sounds like a deal. It's still a class plasma in spite of being an old model

EX is euro. No other way. Not to worry, cos Panasonic uk don't have enough loan screens anyway, in fact I've never seen one of them:D What are the chances of richers lending you a screen? Sweet FA I hear you say. If it goes wrong you are without plasma while it's fixed. That's the only difference. But they really should tell people.
