Generally speaking -r disc are supposed to be the most compatible with DVD players, also on the 710, if you record from a widescreen source e.g. Freeview or Sky, then only -r or -rw discs will record the widescreen switch that automatically sets the TV properly (assuming you watch TV in widescreen or are planning to in the future). You should format the discs as DVD-Video not DVD-VR which is the default setting on the Sony as DVD-Video is the same as standard DVDs and VR is only for editing which you will do on the hard disc drive before transferring to DVD anyway.

By the way - you can set default format for DVD-RW Video Mode in setup menu. Disandvantage of -R/RW is that you have to finilize it manually after recording.

    I'm using Datawrite titanium -R and +R(DL)

I'm still trying to establish whether the machine can do -R(DL)
