I currently own a dreamcast and i think it's getting a bit old, so i'd like to know what console everyone thinks i should get. Looking at the forums it seems there are a few fanboys using a little too much emotive language however, so if people could list the pros and cons etc i would be grateful.

As i understand it, it seems the PS2 is the oldest console with the worst graphics, the Gamecube is in the middle and the Xbox has the best graphics. I'm leaning towards either a PS2 or an Xbox, as it seems the Gamecube library is looking a little lean and i've heard a few rumours etc about the Gamecube, in the UK anyway being withdrawn from most high street shops.

Anyway i would be grateful for peoples input, Thanks!

    I dunno really!!
i love soul calibur, but thats coming out on all the consoles right? Also i have a pc (obviously) so not too bothered about games that are released on pc and consoles as they are often cheaper on pc!. I love shenmue on dreamcast, and also jet set radio, sega bass fishing, ikaruga, racing games. I dunno really, a real mix! I understand that a lot of dreamcast games have been re-issued on xbox. Are these worth getting? Much difference? Gamecube has a few good looking games, such as metroid, res evil, star wars, although mario is a little bit, shall we say... childish?? sorry i don't want to incur peoples wrath! lol

I don't know if i think too much of ps2 though, it isn't really much of a step up from dreamcast IMHO

All of the three consoles has the mix you are looking for, however if you really like your shoot'em ups/driving games and only want one then a chipped PS2 would be my recomendation:

    Shoot'um Ups:
    Dodonpachi DAI-OU-JOU
    Psyvariar
    R Type Final
    X11 Stag

    Beat'um Ups:
    Guilty Gear XX Reloaded
    Virtua Fighter 4 EVO

    Driving Games:
    Initial D
    Gran Tursmo 3
    Ridge Racer 5

Obviously I've only listed the exclusive games.

pirates? *shudders* you don't want to do that, apart from the moral implications the silver discs reck the PS2s DVD drive.

You want a multi region PS2, and chipping it is the only option to get this. You want to be able to take advantage of the cheap second hand PAL market, and the new games from Japan.

Since I switched to a chipped PS2 6 months ago I have only brought 1 UK game new, 3 US games and nearly 10 JPN games.

Most of the games I listed are Japanese only.

Personally I would buy a US Gamecube as I already have :)

If you have a PC an X-Box is really not worth it as most of the games are similar and X-Box Live is bettered by PC online gaming.

The only reason I would recommend a PS2 is if you are a heavy Jap RPG fan, it simply cannot be beaten for this.

    Metroid Prime
    Super Monkey Ball 2
    Ikaruga
    F-Zero
    Rogue Squadron
    Resident Evil 0 and 4
    Eternal Darkness
    Pikmin
    Animal Crossing

These games are so worth it.

Of course you will most probaly get a PS2 but that can't be helped, but with the current low prices I would definately consider both, I will know which will be gathering dust :)

The ps2 also has the largest and best ranges of:

    rythum action
    shoot'um ups
    driving games
    beat'um ups

which is what I think Games Guru was looking for?

I love my GC but it doesn't have a large choice for the above type of games.

I don't think i will be getting a gamecube, every shop i go into in town either has about 5 games for it and thats about it, and other shops don't even do gamecube anymore!

I already have a dreamcast i don't want two dead consoles!

    I'll probably get a PS2 or xbox,

i just head about this new "Phantom" console coming out that is internet only or something.

    Anyone else know about this?

Its a high spec pc with no dvd or cd rom drive. It will play PC games that are streamed to it. Its not really a contenter at this stage.

    Oh right!
i wasn't even sure if it was just vapor ware or not anyway,

doesn't seem like broadband will be fast enough to stream games? At least not 512kbp/s anyway. Maybe the new 2000kbp/s cable broadband though.

or 2 megabit, however you want to call it.

Xbox looks like the best value for money to me at the mo, with the best spec and free games. I already have jet set radio and sega gt, are they worth getting again on xbox?

much difference over the dc versions

I asked myself the same questions earlier this year and went for an Xbox in the end.

I may not be the biggest fan of Microsoft but having looked at the alternatives - my frined had a Playstaion 2 and my Brother bought a Gamecube - I decided it was the best machine, it seems as though now its getting the games to match (Halo 2, Doom 3 etc).

Then theres X Box live !! Not got it yet but im trying, I cant wait to have a go at GRIT with the rest of the people on here (if they put up with crap players that is).

The futures bright and at the moment it seems to be X Box !!:smashin:

I have had them all :).

They are all great consoles but I would choose an X-Box if I had the choice of one because

    1) It is starting to build up a selection of quality games and has some great titles on the horizon.

    2) It has by far the best online support of any console

    3) It is the most powerfull console currently available

The Ps2 is another great machine, with a great catalogue of games, but its the least powerful of the 3 and is cack for online play.

The Cube is another great machine though its games are very very cutsey and seem obviously targeted at a younger audience, though they do have great gameplay. The cube also seems to be losing support and I would avoid unless you want to have another obsolete console to sit next to the cast.

Dont listen to anyone that trys to tell you the X-Box is a glorified PC, because it use pc components, all consoles have processors, graphics cards taken from somewhere.

It sits under your tv and you use game pads to operate it a console :) no different to PS2s and Cubes

Built in HD (faster access & no need for mem cards)

    And then there's in-game DD 5.1....

Better prog scan support and at higher res's

    The list goes on...

    No contest IMO :)

You are right, it is an inferior PC :p

The only choice for X-Box would be PC gamers who are fed up of upgrading their PCs and want a few console type games to go with it.

The X-Box games library is basically 70% PC games and 95% multi-format titles.

The X-Box is a good system if you want online play without the hassle of a PC, however after a while on X-Box Live I still was not impressed. It was like using the in-built games browsers for online PC play, there was no way to use more powerful games browsers, and it definately suffers from a lack of keyboard.

Gamecube still has the quickest load times.

I can be a little fan boy, I don't mind people supporting the X-Box but at least post the facts.

On the whole of it, I suspect the PS2 would satisfy you the most, it does have the widest catalogue and despite being the "worst" hardware, there is still a long way to go until it is technologically left behind. Remember, the PS2 is the worst console to program and developers will likely still be improving the games graphics for a while.

Xbox is better than ps2 & cube you know i know :p
But please enough with the pc stuff

Got bored of my Gamecube after a few months and sold it last week. Luckily I bought when Argos were doing the offer for £70 with 2 games so I didnt lose too much when selling it.

Just bought an XBOX and loving HALO at the moment.

    FYI

PS2 is rumoured to decrease to £129.99 while XBOX to £99.99 in the middle of October. Altough Sony might cut a bit more if they feel they have a need to response even more powerful. GC is rumoured to go down to £79.99 and it might happen when XBOX announces their prices.

    Thanks everyone

It seems to me that after going to town for the day that i will get an xbox, i can get one second-hand for £100 with two games, and the xbox library seems closely allied with the dreamcast, and the controller is the most similar.

Looking around at hmv, game, dixons etc, there was no gamecube stuff in my dixons, half of a shelf in hmv, and hardly any in game. Looks to me like the gamecube has already died!

i don't want a ps2 really as i'm a dreamcast fanboy and everyone says it was sonys fault dreamcast did so badly!

So looks like i will have to usher myself further under the evil corporate banner of microsoft.

I like talking about the PC, because it is an excellent (overpriced!) games machine :)

I really should stop responding to these which should I buy threads, no one ever listens to me anyway!

Happy gaming with the X-Box :p

I bought an Xbox after owning the DC as its the most noticable step up out of the next gen consoles, and has the SEGA games I want. I've recently got a cheap 2nd hand gamecube which is good fun, but rather limited in the selction of games available and has a questionable life expectancy. Having owned a DC you'll know what I'm talking about!

Great choice on the Xbox you will not look back. I have had the Playstation 2 and after playing the X box I sold the PS2 and got one.
Each time I look at the PS2's graphics it just makes me laugh on how c***!! the graphics are i.e. background detail such as birds or trees that look great on the Xbox yet on the PS2 the same detail just looks like various blocks of colour slapped into the background!!
