What causes green and pink lines and NTSC flicker on my PHD8?

I have a Panasonic DVD-S99 player connected to a Panasonic TH-42PHD8 display using a longish (10 m) component video cable. The PDP has the BNC component video board and therefore I have to use RCA to BNC adaptors.

Now I have noticed the picture has very faint horizontal green and pink lines that slowly move up and down. Moving the cable doesn't affect the problem. I suspect the problem has to do with the BNC adaptors or the cable, but can't try another cable yet as the retailer I have ordered the RCA to BNC cable from has problems getting the cable. I don't have another component cable or different adaptors either to give a try.

Has anyone else had picture problems like that and if someone has, what caused the problem in your case?

Another, perhaps related problem is that NTSC material has started to show a slight flicker in the general picture brightness. And yes, it is a flickering brightness problem, not any 3:2 pull down judder.

Thanks.

won't be the bnc adapters, however it may be the cable, a problem with your screen, a problem with the input board, or a problem with your player.

Sorry that doesn't help much, but I would try the cable first.
Have you got another source you can try?

have you got another cable?? even if it is a cheap phono cable, the cheap red and white ones that come in the box?? use a couple of those to test.

Thanks, gizlaroc! As I mentioned I don't currently have another component cable. However, I have to admit I hadn't even considered trying el cheapo audio RCAs. Well, now I have tried them and ...

it seems the colour problem is gone! I still have to try if the NTSC flicker is gone too.

It sounded like really poor shielding or a broken ground on one of the cables.

Not sure on the NTSC flicker thing.

For the changing brightness ensure that the AGC setting in the advanced menu is switched to OFF before doing any further testing and that contrast and input level in particular are set correctly.

The RCA to BNC adaptors could actually be playing a part as well if their impedance is all over the place. It could just be chance that the wonky impedance of the cheap cable helps to balance things out again!

If it is possible you would be well advised to try a BNC to BNC cable which should have correct impedance at both ends and hopefully no damge or other issues as described by Giz!

but then he will need BNC to RCA adapters as the DVD will only have RCA ouputs is BNC to RCA preferable to RCA to BNC???? BNC everywhere would be sommuch better for video why they decided to use RCA i will never know it just confuses people

Well, I finally got that 3RCA-3BNC cable I'd ordered. The NTSC flicker and the colour bands are gone and the general picture quality is better than with the crappy temporary cables. Quite a relief to know the problem wasn't with the plasma or the video board.
