What Capture Card?

    I want to transfer video from my oldish Sony Hi8 machine and use editing software. I am currently using Videowave and Adobe premier.
    What is the best and cheapest way to go about this.
    I have looked at the Pinnacle Studio10plus. This is about £135 but outputs video in Motion JPEG. (That doesn't sound like a common standard to me.)
    I can buy an MPEG encoder for more money - but do I want unedited video to me MPEG?
    I can buy something like the Dazzle Hollywood bridge that outputs in the DV format- which seems like the best - but this unit costs a lot.

    Advive please?

    Go for the Dazzle DV-Bridge

    I have just picked one up from Insight - £228 inc Vat

    I used to struggle capturing largish avi files hoping not to drop too many frames or would the sound be in sync. All this is now a thing of the past - 720x576 DV-Avis are now streamed to my hard drive whilst I'm using the computer for other things :)

    The quality is also very good I run an S-Video lead from my Sky+ box and the resultant SVCDs are very good.

    Thanks Iain and Arthur,

    I'll try posting on that forum- they have a lot of interesting stuff on video there. Just over £200 is still quite a bit of money for the DV Bridge, but I guess it is a fairly specialist product.

    What about MJPEG from Pinnicle? Can this be imported into Premier? (or should I not waste my money and time like I did buying a Dazzle Video creator 80)

    Hi,
    I dont know if this is of any help but i have to agree with mcwill on the Hollywood Bridge. I had been using the capture element of my video card, (ATI Rage Fury pro) and getting so-so results.
    But decided to go for the Hollywood bridge, and I must say the results are excent. I use it with my Raptor DV card and it will capture video for as long as I have hard drive space without frame drops and the picture quaity is ace.
    I now its a lot but it is the right bit of kit to do the job.
