    VIDEO FORMATS

H.264 video up to 720p, 30 frames per second, Main Profile level 3.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps per channel, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats

MPEG-4 video up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats

Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format

    AUDIO FORMATS

HE-AAC (V1), AAC (16 to 320 Kbps), protected AAC (from iTunes Store), MP3 (16 to 320 Kbps), MP3 VBR, Audible (formats 2, 3, and 4), Apple Lossless, AIFF, and WAV; Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound pass-through

In order to play .mkv and other file extensions, or other video codecs such as xvid/divx, you'll need to jailbreak it and install either Plex or XBMC. Likewise, you can only play from a USB flash or hard drive if you jailbreak. As standard it only streams from either online content (iTunes Store, Netflix [coming soon]) or from a computer on your network running iTunes.

I've not done it on the ATV2 - there are a few threads on here about it you can read up on - but when I did it on my ATV1 it was as simple as plugging a USB stick in and turning on the power!

Some people have had no probs with the ATV2, but some have had nightmares. Deffo do a full read up before going any further!

There's also no way to directly attach a hard disk via USB to a atv2. Whether its jailbroken or not. It's network storage only.

Nope, at least not unless its changed recently. The micro USB is only a slave port so can't handle hard disks, its basically there for updates.
