Okay, feeling a little dumb right now, but I cannot work out what cable I need to connect my subwoofer to my av receiver.

The sub (cheap cambridge audio) has red and black bare wire connectors and the receiver (sherwood r-956) seems to only offer a single rca input.

Both manuals are next to useless, unless I am reading them wrong.

I currently have some regular speaker cable running around the room to the sub and would like to use that if possible.

    Any suggestions?

Does the sub have an amplifier built in? Which model is it?

The red and black connections on the sub are for amplified signals.
The connector on the Sherwood is low level, designed to be amplified by the sub.
Cutting to the quick, it won't work mate :(
As Xerstead implies, you need an active sub, ie one with it's own amplifier.

It could be done if you buy an additional amplifier to connect to the subwoofer output on your existing amplifier and then to the subwoofer. But you'd be better off finding a 'active' subwoofer with amplifier built in. Check out the Subwoofer forums for suggestions.
