What Aspect Ratio Of Sharpe

Does anyone know anything about the aspect ratio on the TV series Sharpe. I though when the very first series was screened (the first time) it was not quite 4:3 with slight black bars at the top, and bottom of the screen. Which lead me to believe it could be in 16:9, but show in this format, just waiting for W/S TV’s to become more popular, then could be shown in the correct format. At weekend though I saw the series out on DVD but on the back it stated 4:3 format. Even Play states the same:confused:

It was filmed widescreen (I believe it was 14:9, like a lot of stuff in the early 90's)

The DVD (Sharpe's Rifle/Eagle) is mislabelled as 4:3. The discs are actually14:9 (non-anamorphic)

Thanks CW2000 for the info, that’s the DVD I looked at. As I read the books previous to the TV series I knew these were the first of the stories(well Gold was the first, earlier stories were prequels).

I've got the first one and it's decent.
Hopefully we'll be running competitions for discs 3 and onwards.

I already have all these on VHS.

Is the picture quality greatly improved on the DVD?

Any extras worthy of mention?

Regards

http://www.splashdvd.com are selling the Sharpe 2 disc sets for £10.99 each

They currently have:

Sharpe's Rifles / Sharpe's Eagle
Sharpe's Company / Sharpe's Enemy
Sharpe's Honour/sharpe's Gold

Also, if you collect all the releases you can send off for Sharpe's Legend (for about £4 I think)
