What are your Top 10 movies?

Night of The Demon (aka Curse of The Demon)
One of the best scenes, but it's been cut in most versions released to the public these days.
Hint: Bauhaus' Stigmata Martyr is playing.
I actually lost a 'friend' when I posted that scene to FB.

If I were to make a compilation of scenes I like from films I'd rather not watch all the way through, that would be one scene.

The Matrix
Toy Story
Arrival
Fellowship of the Ring
Black Hawk Down
The Godfather
Skyfall
Pride & Prejudice
Dunkirk
Jurassic Park

Matrix, Fellowship always on the list, others come and go depending on mood. Blade Runner, Apocalypse Now, Lion King, Terminator, Infinity War and Empire Strikes Back all close to the list too.

Very difficult to choose only 10, but in no particular order

Cool Hand Luke
Downfall
The Elephant Man
Manhunter
Good The Bad & The Ugly
Trading Places
Kelly's Heroes
Weird Science
The Pianist
They Live

The Godfather
12 Angry Men
Jermiah Johnson
The Outlaw Josey Wales
Predator
The Shawshank Redemption
The Empire Strikes Back
Schindlers List
Jaws
Saving Private Ryan

😀

No country for old men
Pulp fiction
The Big Lebowski
The Royal Tenenbaums or Darjeeling limited
Terminator
The Matrix
The Bourne Identity
Jackie Brown
Jack Reacher
Alien

Can I add the Gentlemen to have one Guy Ritchie !

Ah, that's a different film, I think you're talking about Night of The Demons, the one I mentioned is this one:

I think the greatest film ever made is Schindlers List but that doesn't make my top 10 as, due to the subject matter, its not a film I want to watch often

Predator
Platoon
Pulp Fiction
The Matrix
Rocky
Les Miserables
Big Wednesday
Zulu
Donnie Brasco
Tombstone

I have more than 10! But in no particular order:-

Alien
Aliens
Predator
The Terminator
Terminator 2
RoboCop
Raiders of the Lost Ark (Could swap with Last Crusade)
Back to the Future
The Matrix
Interstellar

Another top 10

Fight Club
The Dark Knight
Inception
Predator 2
Ghostbusters
First Blood
The Goonies
The Thing
The Prestige
Man of Steel

These are my favourites, but that doesn't mean there aren't films that I see as superior in terms of filmmaking, these are just the ones that had the biggest impact on me or impressed me for a different reason. I also have a bit of a recency bias:

1. Her (2013)
2. Die Hard (1988)
3. Lost in Translation (2004)
4. Jurassic Park (1993)
5. Uncut Gems (2019)
6. Good Time (2017)
7. Margin Call (2011)
8. Victoria (2015)
9. Dead Calm (1989)
10. Watcher (2022)

Yeh that’s a good point.

2 of my top 3 (Jaws/Shawshank) I don’t watch that often. The other, Aliens, I watch every year.

Then I have other movies that i’ve seen several times in the last few years (Martian/Sicario/MI Fallout) and love to death.

Hadn’t really considered that they could be in my top 10….yet.

PS Schindler’s is an incredible film. Only seen it twice in the last decade though.

i have a constant changing top.5...... mostly though they are a mixture of films which are pure fudgeing perfection and stuff that brings me happy memories...

1. Bruce Lee movies - ok there is a few but i count as 1 - Enter the Dragon/Fist of Fury are probably my most seen.

2. The Blues Brothers

3. Aliens

4. Ferris Buellers Day Off

5. Predator

notable modern mentions to Winter Soldier and The Dark Knight though.
Winter Soldier just misses out for me by a whisker

That’s the thing with this list, it’s the films you would HAVE to watch one last time. It’s all down to personal preference instead of the usual ‘Top 10 films ever’ etc

Since I made mine, I’ve thought of several more that I could of added, Casino, True Lies, The Abyss, Toy Story, any Eastwood Spaghetti western, Tombstone, Heat, Spartacus, Ben Hur, Black Hawk Down, Schindlers List, MI Fallout, Obilivion, the list could go on and on!

I choose my 10 on the amount of times I’ve watched them, and continue to. My criteria came down to having watched them a minimum once a year and if I’m channel hopping and one appears, I watch it from where it is then! 😂

Opps. Just re read the OP again. Didn’t read the bit about the asteroid lol.

Would probably list a different top 10 if a big rock (or WW3 to be more realistic :D ) was imminent. My top 3 would still make either list mind.

That's it exactly, favourite movies not technically the best. The two aren't always the same!

You may love some shoddily made dumpster fire of a movie but if it means a lot to you, put it on your list.

Be entirely subjective, to hell with what anyone else thinks. There's no such thing as a guilty pleasure, if you love something then love it unashamedly.

^^^^
Well when you put it like that, i’d probably have Trading Places on the list!

1. Armageddon
2. Deep Impact
3. Melancholia
4. Seeking a Friend for the end of the World
5. Greenland
6. Don’t Look Up
7. Meteor
8. Night of the Comet
9. 2012
10. Independence Day

the hopeful sort might also include rookie of the year..

My most watched films of all time are;
Inception
Interstellar
Prestige
Batman Begins / Dark Knight / Dark Knight Rises
Terminator 2
Fellowship of the Ring
Shawshank Redemption
Godfather 1/2
Matrix

I suppose anything with Nolan 😍

1
The Crow
(1994)
Not a great movie by conventional measures, but my absoute favourite for a lot of reasons. I've bought the VHS, DVD, Blu-Ray and digital versions so far…..
2
Interstellar
(2014)
Such a wonderful score, with fabulous story, characters and cast. The third act gets stick for being the weakest, but it's what makes he movie for me - great Sci-Fi grounded in real science upended by something fantastical that's there throughout the movie. I love it, even though I cry like a baby when they watch the messages from home.
3
Apocalypse Now
(1979)
Doesn't put a foot wrong anywhere, even the French plantation scene is dripping with symbolism. The overwhelming chaos and the different approaches to managing, coping and variously noping out are endlessly fascinating with maximum rewatchability.
4
Blade Runner 2049
(2017)
Picked this one over the original as given the choice would watch 2049. For me it cements the Deckard question but opens up a lot of other juicy dilemas to ponder. And it does that with drop dead gorgeous cinematography and phenominal sound. It's reference material all round.
5
Thin Red Line
(1998)
I can see why people would think this is indulgent or overlong, but if you really engage with it there's a lot to love here - assuming you can get past the repeated horror of war / beauty of nature juxtaposition. Giving Shakespear in Love the Best Picture Oscar over this was a travesty.
6
Fight Club
(1999)
All the people who said they saw it coming - without knowing before they saw it for the first time - are lying! All three leads (Brad Pitt, Edward Norton & Helena Bonham Carter) give close to career high performaces (it is peak Pitt) and the inventive direction and rapid storytelling make it irresistable.
7
The Jerk
(1979)
The first movie I had an emotional reaction to, it just "got to me" which is the main reason I've loved this film over the years and is in my list, but the preposterous story, on point humour and Steve Martin's delivery seal the deal. This was making white people being black and proud a decade before the Commitments was doing it.
8
The Pianist
(2002)
This film makes my heart ache. I think it's unlikely any of us that hasn't experienced it can really understand the pain civillians can suffer in war, so I'm glad films like this exist and wish we would continue to learn from them. The sheer terror when the can of peaches rolls onto a nazi shoe was chilling with the instant realisation what that could mean - I stopped breathing. It's as thought provoking as it is edge of your seat, and Brody is sublime.
9
Dune
(2021)
Was blown away by this in the cinema, an epic film that nods towards the scale of the universe without feelin the need to cram in exposition to explain it all away and a story given room to breathe. Much more acomplished retelling of the story than the Sting version. Very excited for the follow up, but this has raised expectations considerably - not always a good thing!
10
Drive
(2011)
It's just so. fudgeing. Cool. There's lashings of style, from the aloof anti-hero, the direction and to the outrageously good soundtrack yet there's still enough emotional pull to be invested in the twisting story and character relationship and their outcomes.

There's probably about another 20 movies (Taxi Driver, Donnie Darko, Demolition Man and Gremlins) that would swap into my top ten depending on my mood and whimsy, but that's a fair snapshot and the top three are unlikely to change no matter the list.

EDIT: added years
