Almost Famous is my top title, no contest. Watched Proof of Life last night and that is pretty respectable. Also O Brother Where Art Thou, Crouching Tiger and Miss Congeniality (seriously!) are up there :)

I liked the new anamorphic TORA, TORA, TORA. ALMOST FAMOUS was X-cellent. NURSE BETTY is a winner. I finally got to see THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE in it's wide glory. It has to be the most under-rated western of all time. LUST IN THE DUST gets my vote for guilty pleasure of the year. I've watched CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON once in English and once in Mandarin. BUTTERFLY (Espanol) is a great film about events leading up to the Spanish revolution. I agree with Black 5, MISS CONGENIALITY is hilarious. I am very pleased at the wonderful job Fox has done on older films like THE SAND PEBBLES, VON RYAN'S EXPRESS, and the previously mentioned TORA thang.

The year's biggest bummer is the lack of STAR TREK. The remixed original film is delayed, and no NEXT GENERATION or DEEP SPACE NINE....Best wishes from Laserland!

Since you asked about the purchase and not the release I assume old movies count, too? Then here we go, in no particular order:

Gladiator (R4/DTS) - nice movie, great soundtrack

Feet of Flames (R2-6) - just the beautiful music and colorful picture

Heaven and Earth (R1) - somehow I love that movie

Princess Mononoke (R?) - great jap. Anime and c/w 5.1 surround sound

The Long Kiss Goodnight (R1) - because of that LFE

Haven't seen CTHD yet but have it on order (R1).

    Top 5.........

    1. Pulp Fiction - I just LOVE this film!

    2. Fight Club - A little wierd but the plane crash scene just blows me away (and the neighbours!)

    3. Charlies Angels - Good one for getting the lads round!

    4. X-Men - Patrick Stewart is brilliant.

    5. Pitch Black - Only just got this one but the soundtrack is great and the filming is out of this world.

Pictures of my set-up in the photo section.......click here!

Apart from the obvious choices of Gladiator, Charlies Angels and Terminator SE. The five films I ordered with trepidation but was pleasantely surprised by are:-

MISS CONGENIALITY- Sandra Bullock actually made me laugh
LOVE HONOUR AND OBEY- Some great one liners
THE REPLACEMENTS- Monica's boyfreind from Freinds in great form
THE CONTENDER- Would have been better with out the jingoistic ending
    VERTICAL LIMIT- Great effects

Biggest disapointment has to be Crouching Tiger, sorry but I didn't rate it much.

There are 5 discs in the Stingray box set, so that's my choice.

(and Captain Scarlet will be my top 5 - or 6 if some rumours are to be believed - in the latter half)

My top five discs purchsed this year would be as follows:

    i) Lawrence of Arabia - a classic film remastered to perfection.

ii) Terminator, Special Edition, a must have disc. Maybe the only reason why Americans need a multi region player.

iii) Fifth Element - had it on laser disc but this DVD shows what DVD quality is all about.

iv) Billy Elliot - a film for the family.

    v) Space Cowboys - the older you are the more you appreciate the film.

I have to say that we seem to be missing the really good new blockbusters so far this year, it's a good job that there are some first class special editions and remastered old films.

To be honest, so far 2001 hasn't been all that great for DVD releases of new films, but more so rereleases of old titles. This is partly due to the fact that this year, so far, there has been NOTHING to see at the cinema. As a result, this year, in just 3-4 months, I have purchased more DVDs which I don't want after viewing them than in three years of buying DVDs.

My 5 favourite titles would consist of mainly older titles that have been spruced up for purchase in 2001 and they are, in no particular order:

    Superman the movie
    Seven DTS
    The Crow DTS
    What Lies Beneath DTS
    The Iron Giant

    Dave G,

Can I just say that "Love, Honour And Obey" is probably the most dire British film I have ever had the audacity to sit through!!

For anyone who doesn't know, this film was supposed to be another "Lock, Stock...." starring Jude Law, Jonny Lee Miller, Sadie Frost, Ray Winstone, et al. Alas, it's truly the saddest crime caper ever, and borders on childish!

How can so many great actors, choose such a dire film to be in, I'll never know?! I don't think I've actually seen a genuinely positive review of this movie, and that excludes quotes from the likes of "The Sun" paper, "Loaded", et al, as they all know zip about movies!

Just my opinion... but does anyone else agree?

Hard to remember what was purchased this year but....

    (1) Crouching Tiger (R3)
    (2) Gladiator (R1)
    (3) Unbreakable (R1)
    (4) Rocky SE (R2)
    (5) Princess Mononoke (R1)

Ask me at the end of the year and the likes of The Phantom Menace (Great Extras) and Shrek (Dreamworks always come up with the goods) are likely to be in there from what I have seen so far.
