I have just tried a budget DVD+RW disc and it was horrible, despite an up-to-date firmware fix for my machine. I am now attempting to decide between Philips and Verbatum, both of which are quite reasonable (if the quality is good). Which is better, or is there another???

Generally any 'big brand' media will be of a suitable quality: Maxell, Verbatim, JVC, Sony, TDK, HP etc.

Better to buy by manufacturer media code rather than brand (see here), and therefore from a website that displays these codes for the discs on sale (eg SVP).

Yes that is good advice - although not very practical if your popping down your local high street. In many instances it is better to do as the original poster has done and ask 'What Works?'.

Very good advice. When you read the link you will be in no doubt between those two choices.
