I am looking to get a basic sound system to go with a DVD Player and am confused by the various permutations of equipment that seem to be available. I would appreciate some help with understanding, or possible ruling out, the options.

    My basic requirements are:
    • A discreet system (so, leaning towards the sub/sat solution)
    • Around the £300 mark (s/h is a possibility as it should get me more for my money!
    • I watch/listen to quite a few music DVDs (concerts, etc.) and need it to sound good with those, as well as movies

From what I’ve gathered, so far, it seems that the following are available…..

    Products Available
D1 = DVD Player (no surround sound processor built-in or it is not used)
D2 = DVD Player (surround sound processor built-in)

S1 = Speakers (amp and surround sound processor built-in)
    S2 = Speakers (amp built-in)
S3 = Speakers (no amp and surround sound processor built-in)

R1 = AV Receiver (amp and surround sound processor)

    Possible Combinations
    D1 + S1
    D2 + S2
    D1 + R1 + S1
    D1 + R1 + S2
    D1 + R1 + S3

    Questions
    1. Are there examples of all these types of products?
    2. Are the combinations I’ve described possible/sensible?
    3. Are there any other combinations/products?
    4. For my limited budget, is there an obvious best option?
      [/list=1]

Sorry it’s a bit long-winded, but, I will appreciate any help from you guys! Maybe there is a web site with a lot of this info already that someone can point me to.
