Took my little lad out on his balance bike and would be interested to find out distance covered by drawing on a map or something.

Is there such an app if so which one would you recommend?

A nice free one would be good ;)

can highly recommend Runkeeper - used it a lot last year to track times/distances when out walking/cycling

easy to use, looks good and perhaps best of all it's free. word of warning though, it's a battery eater due its to constant use of gps

Runkeeper doesn't let you plan a route, it just maps where you've been using gps and then draws a line on map and calculates the distance for you

Used Runkeeper for ages now, both free and pro versions, and its never let me down for walking, running or cycling. Just change the type of activity prior to setting it going and away you go. Loads of stats whilst its running including overlaying your route on a map and then once done you have the choice of viewing it on the phone still with the same info available or more stuff available via the Runkeeper website on your computer. I tried Endomondo but wasnt as keen on it.

Runkeeper also lets you edit a route afterwards to correct any mistakes or add bits if need be.]#

The only thing i know off that lets you do a route on a map afterwards to work out distance etc isnt an app but a website called gmap pedometer :-

Do any off these apps allow you overlay your route onto a satellite map?

I've used run keeper, but you only see your route transposed over the road map, so my off road routes just show up as a squiggly line on a grey background.

With Runkeeper it also uploads it to their website where it overlays onto Google Maps so you get all the options you would normally get from looking at Google Maps.

In terms of the app for me it loads the standard Google Maps view so anything off road shows up over green areas for fields etc but not a grey background. Normally it shows a grey background if it has no data connection to download the maps as its going. I had this when i used it to track a walk in France once and had my data connection turned off to prevent running up a big bill.
