heres one on windows security :lesson: .

iv certainly been through some av and fws in my time.

eg. norton (when i was a noob :rotfl: ), panda, dr web, nod32, zone alarm and as for fw's i used many of them in the past too like black ice, windows, sygate, zone alarm.

now i use truly the best in AV and FW imo and alot of the more advanced users use these ones too which is...

    kerio personal firewall, 10/10 everytime!
and as for anti virus i use avast hoe edition which is better and more flexible and has more protections than any other AV iv used recently.

all avast misses is a firewall, maybe one day though :smashin: .

so how about you guys  ...

my toshiba laptop came with norton installed,
but on my home pc I use zone alarm because I like to see the little green and red bars that let you know something is happening.

AVG (the free version) and the hardware firewall in my router along with the inbuilt XP firewall, although I'm not sure if the latter actually makes any difference ;)

I use Kerio for my firewall and Kaspersky for my anti-virus. Kaspersky always gets good reviews and usually comes top in Anti-virus group-tests so it remains a mystery why more people don't use it  Though I suppose if you can get AVG for free then why pay for your Anti-virus software?

    Sygate & AVG for me

Have used Zone Alarm in the past , but it had some major issues about 12-18 months ago . So ditched that for Sygate . No problems since :smashin:

Used to use Norton , but ditched it 10 days ago (it was renewal time) . Now use AVG

edit: just thought id add, my mate pays £25 a year to update mcaffee password manager  how can you update that?

Trend Internet Security II AV and FW on both PC's.

Not been beaten by anything yet (kiss of death) unlike the various versions of Nortons I've had in the past.

I've heard good things about kerio. I'm thinking of changing away from Norton as it is resource hungry and some components have broken. I've not heard of Avast though. How costly is it to go with two different products for FW and AV?

Kerio Personal Firewall is free of charge for non-commercial use and NOD32 prices are very reasonable considering its record

    Erm, in a word, No.

It's a mess to get rid of once installed on a machine. I normally go through the uninstall routine followed by a manual (and lengthy) prune of the system registry. It leaves all sorts of rubbish behind.

I'd like to thank oxygenuk and contributors for this thread. Ditched Norton for kerio and avast and will see how it goes, so far so good.

FYI I found a symantec removal utility that I ran after the Norton uninstall and it cleaned up pretty well, but we'll see ;)

Sygate software firewall, hardware firewall, and AVG antivirus. Norton is the most horrific piece of bloatware aside from Windows itself.................
