Reference the £2,500 Onkyo TX-DS989, I copied the item below from the Onkyo site after reading the new copy of "What Video & TV" (out today, Thurs 3rd). In addition to what's written below, the magazine also states and I quote word for word "Owners of existing models can get the upgrade for free until the 31st of August from UK Onkyo service stations. After this date it will cost around £100. The RS 232 connection allows other current Onkyo products to be upgraded."

Come on Denon, what are *you* waiting for??? It would appear that some companies actually support their loyal customers and others don't bother! Naturally I'm referring to the farce surrounding the upgrade for the Denon AVC-A1SE!

    Regards

    "Onkyo TX-DS989 upgrade

ONKYO can now officially announce that the engineering and licensing for the eagerly awaited upgrade of the highly acclaimed ONKYO TX-DS989 Receiver is now successfully completed and TX-DS989 now shipped from the ONKYO warehouse will additionally to the given formats (Dolby Digital 5.1, Dolby EX, DTS 5.1, THX Surround EX) be equipped with the new analog surround format DOLBY PRO LOGIC II, DTS 6.1 Discrete and DTS neo-6 is also provided. With this upgrade ONKYO now offers one of the first products on the market to be both THX Ultra certified and also able to reproduce ALL decoding standards. This is in keeping with the company's policy and promise, as announced last year, that the TX-DS989 will be upgradeable for future formats.

Thanks to the RS-232 connection at the rear of the TX-DS989, existing TX-DS989's at the consumers or dealers can also be upgraded. The ONKYO service stations in each country will carry out the upgrade from July 2001 on. If you already own your 989 and would like to get the upgrade applied to your unit please contact your dealer or distributor (see "Distributors") respectively for detailed information on how to get the upgrade done."

Good idea Matt! I think I'll e-mail it to Denon too, for good measure.

    Hi Matt!

No luck I'm afraid. Not even Stuart M Robinson has wanted to pop round I suppose I really need to go somewhere for some lessons as reading things from a book isn't really the best way. There are some things I just don't understand at all. Take my B&W 605's (with built-in subs) and even they have two knobs (LF and EQ Level) which I've just set about the middle! I can forget about the Phase switch too! There is light at the end of the tunnel though, as I do know what to do with the Auto-Sense, On/Off and Voltage Select switches. If I'm confused by my speakers you can just imagine how I feel about the Denon! There's so much I need to know but only an expert would be able to tell me how it all sounds and if I've made any huge gaffs. As I've said before, it does sound great to me but I have absolutely no yardstick to compare. Horror of horrors I didn't even audition one single item in my set up and it's cost me a small fortune! I just thought that some local expert might have been sufficiently nosy just to come round for a look and a listen. The trouble is, how would I know the level of his expertise? I suppose I could visit a local hi-fi shop and pay someone to come round but that's a bit defeatist.

Regards

    Jim

PS I did e-mail Denon (again!) regarding the Onkyo v Denon upgrade situation.

    Jim,

Well if you're prepared to supply route directions and an endless supply of tea then I could probably be persuaded to visit at some point, for a listen that is!

Have you SPL'd the channels yet?

I think it's always interesting to see/talk about other peoples' setups. Very often it's work in progress but that's half the fun - making do with what you've got until you get the next bit sorted out. Sadly, for some people there isn't that far to go

Anyway, hope you're still having fun with it all - have you upgraded the software on your remote yet?

    Matt

    Hi Matt!

I've just been along to Sainsbury's and bought you enough tea to sink all the ships at the Boston Tea Party!! I also bought gallons of fresh Scottish spring water and Milk of Human Kindness by the pint!

I've also just sent you a PM (Private Message) which can be accessed through the "My Profile" section on this site. Never noticed it before!

I have SPL's the channels but whether I've done it properly is another matter! I haven't upgraded the horrible remote control as that would confuse me even more! What if it started to crash or something!! Believe it or not I haven't even worked out how to change mode from Music to Cinema in DTS NEO-6 via the remote control. I have to walk over to the amp and do it there!

I've just received you e-mail and sent you a quickie reply.

    Regards

    Jim
