I've started to think more and more about the screendoor... of the Z1.. I figure it could be a bit of a problem with my room and the projectors throw ratio...

this 300U is a short throw projector too but is widely regarded as being excellent with regards to screendoor...

combine that with its DVI means i guess that its HTPC performance would be great... I assume DVI is the preferred transport for PC video... I know it is for desktops but i imagine the length runs required for projectors make its digital transmission even more important....

It looks like its quiet too, the same with the Z1 in low light mode, once you have fixed it from spinning up every so often if your unit suffers from that problem...

I'll keep looking but the only other thing is how it performs with composite and general tv... the Z1 isn't supposed to excel at this though its not really of prime importance...

Has it got the dcdi deinterlacer in the 300 ?!? i know the X1 was which is supposed to benefit from it, but i also heard that these deinterlacers can introduce a small visible lag to the picture that can make your audio/video out of sync... has the 300 got this chip!??

Finally.. wierdly on the US panasonic site its listed as a business projector... i've looked at the prices, anyone know how much it will be over here... has it been definately announced as coming out of here in April time...!?!?

I dunno if i'll be able to wait, and importing doesn't really appeal... I can see myself going for the Z1 if it takes too long....

    Thanks

I am surprised that you are concerned with screen door on the z1.
I had a fine demo of it last week.

On a nine foot screen, I sat nowhere near 18 foot away, probably 8 foot in fact, and saw zero evidence of screen door.

I watched about an hour and a half of spiderman, a poor DVD transfer at best and it looked great, with decent black levels to.

Its a great LCD PJ in my opinion. I am getting one on the demo alone.

    I hope this helps.

I have nothing against the Z1... I'm just going on what i've read...

Finding someone who demos these projectors in the Nottingam/Derby area is proving difficult.. I'm going to have to make do with generic DLP, LCD projector demo and then go on from there... ordering via mailorder...

I'll be seeing an optima h50, and a sony H1 I think... be interesting if i can spot rainbows...

I believe the Z1 and panasonic 300u are very similar projectors, as well as the X1 from what i've read... the benefits are a reduced amount of screendoor.. which as a sight unseen thing is encouraging as I am going to have to go against popular recommendations with the Z1 if i got one.. as in sitting underneath the projector.. being less than 1.8x away...

If the 300u is MUCH more money then i may have to consider that against it.. whos to know how much we will get stung on its price as we always do in the UK....

If i could view a Z1 and be happy about it then i would definately get one.. in all honesty if I cant stand the wait for 300u i may get one anyways.. I've heard nothing but good things about it, in the context of its price...

I am trying to find Z1 / 300u comparisons somewhere... i think projectorcentral did one... and only really hit on the improved screendoor...

Ohh .. the DVI though is really starting to appeal... this has surely got to be the best way to get 1:1 pixel matching... its on tv and low quality sources that i'd like to see a comparison between the two.. this is the only area where I've read that the Z1 is only average at...

    Thanks for your reply

Actually, we kept repeating some of the colour/contrast intense scenes from the said Peter Parker epic. Thankkfully, I did not see the Z1 get caught out once. We also looked at Episode 1 too. The POD race was great....

Let me tell you about the demo.

On friday, I attened the what hi-fi show in my home city, Bristol.
To my surprise, Owl video were there drumming up business, in the process, demoing the Z1 on behalf of Sanyo.
Now, these guys do not sell directly, the are not retailers, they are however, home cinema specialists and I think they supply dealers with screens/PJ's etc if that makes sense.

The objective review that the guys from owl gave me was fantastic. As before I witnessed it with my own eyes. I bombarded them with questions about the z1 but all of my questions were answered.

I know that you are referring to Panasonics pending new PJ, but the Z1 knocksa spots off the PTAE100. However, like you I may delay my purchase just to see how the 300 shapes up in UK reviews.

In fact one of the guys from owl told me that at the the Manchester hi-fi show, he had to turn off the z1 as people were comparing it to a Sim projector, and asking how manufacturers could justify the massive difference in price.!!!

I know that i am not answering your technical questions, but for me, considering the Z1 is going in a dedicated film room with DVD only I suspect that it will be more than OK. By the way did you know that the Z1 can do progressive PAL???

    Thanks,

    CB

I did know that the Z1 could do progressive PAL yes... I've read on avsforum that some people have had trouble with progressive and the Z1.. others haven't... its a tread carefully thing i guess.. but then again what purchase isn't now a days...

I've asked elsewhere, but as you were at the What Hifi show.. do you have last months copy of What Hifi that reviewed the Z1... i'm trying to get hold of it.. but shops all seem to have upgraded to this months issue :(

Funny and encouraging that they had to switch off the Z1 top stop the comments against the Sim being too expensive.. I've no doubt those machines are great but they have always been the reason why i couldn't do projectors.. too much money :)

The 300u has been compared with everything in the US... i doubt it will change much..

"If you want to stick with a regular DVD player, and you are not sitting too close to the screen, then save the money and go for the PLV-Z1. If you want to use a computer, or you want to sit in the range of 1.5x the screen width or closer to the screen, you will be better off investing the extra money to eliminate the pixelation that you'd otherwise have with the Z1."
