    Hi guys,

I've just read in What Hi-Fi? that the Wharfedale SW150 is brilliant value for money, and considering whether this sub would be suitable for my home cinema in the living room.

Does anyone have any experience with it, and will it go well with my Mission M71s and a Pio VSX-D814 receiver? The room is 5m by 3.5m.

    Thanks in advance,

    Mat.

Wharfedale have made some good subs in this catagory before and this one seems to have the basics covered. I can't quantify how good it might be because despite the fact that WHF have a 309 (which won the last budget test), they decided not to pop in that test :suicide:. I'm sure it will happen sooner or later.

what hifi only compares the sub to other new subs, not to older subs such as the ms309 which they previously have claimed to be the best...

No, I can't seem to find it either. According to What Hi-Fi? its in the "Diamond 9" range. Can't really find any information about the Diamond 9 range either - perhaps its too new ??

The Diamond speakers at the front of that issue of WHF hadn't been released yet so it might be the same for the sub.

Wharfedale have a 309? I can't find that on the net either. Are you sure you don't mean the Mordaunt-Short 309?

Yes and what I meant is that WHF magazine still have the 309 we (MS) sent them last time when it won. That it didn't go head to head this time means I have nothing to relate the Whafedales performance to.

I hope so. I'm probably going to kick myself later for saying this but you'd do interested parties a big favour if you could test both.

It would probably be very difficult for me to compare the two in terms of sound quality as I'm profoundly deaf. However, subs do make a huge difference to me as I can feel the effects.

What I'm trying to establish here is whether either of these subs would be a suitable match for my system based on the type of speakers and amp I have. It's very difficult for me to go and test several subs because of my hearing, which is why I'm asking peoples' opinions here.

    Thanks,
    Mat.

Both of these subs should work happily with speakers in the £150-350 (per pair) as they have good respose between 25 and 80hz. The 309 has tweaky features like the notch filter on its side (allowing for better room setup) and the ally driver looks quite special.

Finally found it. Seems that the new Diamond 9 range is due to be released in Oct, which is probably why it hasn't appeared on the Net till now.

    Here it is:

yeah, I very interested in seeing what sub between these two is the better...its looking more likely that I'll be upgrading my sub....

edit - the only issue I seem to have is that botgh of these sub only go down to 35Hz - whereas my Eltax claims it can do down to 30Hz, but with my Avia test disk, I've heard audioble tones at 32Hz...

so, would i actually potenially lose out by buying one of these newer budget subs..?

You have to be very careful not to get too hung up on manufacturer's specs as most of them could well have been written by a government spin doctor for all the use they are. There are many ways of measuring depth, most of which are unduly flattering to the sub manufacturer but of equal importance is the amount of distortion produced as there is no point reproducing sounds further down the frequency range if it all just audible distortion.

Unfortunately accurate, deep sub bass cannot be reproduced cheaply and most of the budget subs are a compromise in one way or another.

As of the end of October the new "economy" SVS will play cleanly down to 20Hz for £350 and I very much doubt whether any other sub can get any where that level of performance for the price.

It includes delivery and all taxes and could well be the subwoofer bargain of the decade if the performance lives up to it's paper spec.

Either way I'll tell you all as soon as mine lands

Dfour, which model is the SVS you are waiting for? I have been reading a lot about SVS subs and, if it is not much more than the 309 or XLS200, I may be tempted! How much is it?

It will be this little monster in black :D I am guessing it will be about $540 + import taxes + Bax's fee.
