Sorry if this is a stupid question but will the sub woofer connect ok with the sony STR-DN1080 amp?
Hi all,
I have a basic amp by Yamaha (http 3067)
HTR-3067 - Specs - Yamaha - Canada - English
Does anyone know if this would sufficently drive the Wharfedale DX2 speakers?
This was just talked here (cheap receiver + DX2s); Question - Impedence ratings.....
3067 = RX-V367, budget receiver and you would be best to look something else which would be easier to drive with your Yammy! You didn`t mention anything about your room / possible speaker placement. Here is couple great options if you don`t have any big limitations there (like tv in corner etc.), higher sensitivity = less power hungry and nominal impedance of 8ohm (Tannoy) / 6ohm (QA) will be easier load to your receiver.

Partnered with BK Gemini II to stay within your budget, step up from DX2 sub too!

Or Q Acoustics 3000 serie, you can get 3020 mains for extra 20£ if size isn´t problem!
Q Acoustics Q3010: x2, Q3070s and Q3090c (Walnut)
Q Acoustics 3010 x2, 3090C and 3070S Subwoofer (Graphite)
Thank you for your recommendations.
My amp says it takes 6 ohm (min). And also the following:
Rated Output Power (1kHz, 1ch driven) - 100 W (6ohms, 0.9% THD)
Rated Output Power (20Hz-20kHz, 2ch driven) 70 W (6ohms, 0.09% THD)
Maximum Effective Output Power (1kHz, 1ch driven) (JEITA) 135 W (6ohms, 10% THD)
I have a poor understanding of how these specs relate to driving speakers. I trust that it means that I can't get speakers below 6 olms, but is there anything else I should be aware of when considering options?
By the way, my set up is a medium sized room. speakers wall mounted.
Many thanks for your help.
I would just make sure the nominal impedance is 6-8ohms, just to be on the safe side. I wouldn`t get too hung up on the figures as you probably will listen moderate volume levels and subwoofer takes some weight off from the receiver anyway (you need to check couple settings). What matters is how the speakers will sound, concentrate on that. If you have some hifi shops near you, go listen couple different models within your budget and you will be wiser. Some speakers will work better near walls (wall mounted), so mention this also when shopping. Most dealers will let you listen/compare the models you want, depending what they have on stock!
I could throw one option more as you mentioned wall mounting and looking something compact sized. MA Mass is going now for very low price and is quite popular here with forum members. Can be easily wall mounted. You could then choose subwoofer more freely, example the one i linked or larger (www.bkelec.com). This is ex-demo model, but new can be had for 350£, from AVO;

Good review Ed. Are these sufficiently better than the Monitor Audio Mass 5.1 (you reviewed a few years back) to upgrade? I originally had the Mass in my dedicated room, now replaced with XTZ M6 LCR and Arendal Sub 2 (superb combo). I am using the Mass as 2.1 in lounge for TV and Sonos connect simply because they were spare, but still really impressed with them for their size. I know they can be bettered, obviously, but always difficult to judge diminishing returns at similar price points.
I can tell you I bought the q7000i set last Saturday and they're really good, I was going back and forth in both of these just like you, but finding the q7000i for 500 quid is what swung it for me.Given the choice between the Wharfedale DX2 and the QAcoustics Q7000i, what would sound best?
Thank you, much appreciated. I’m just concerned going from small satellites to small satellites is not going to be a big upgrade, and maybe larger speakers are the way to go. The Q7000i was £499 at RS with VIP membership (which is free), then yesterday they bumped the price upto £599 . I can’t win.I can tell you I bought the q7000i set last Saturday and they're really good, I was going back and forth in both of these just like you, but finding the q7000i for 500 quid is what swung it for me.
That's where I got them from, glad I did now...Thank you, much appreciated. I’ve seen reviews of the Q7000i (including the AVF one) that mention the speaker terminals are quite small and fiddly.I was hoping to use my current Van Damme Blue cable which is 2.5mm, do you think the Q7000i terminals will accept this size speaker cable? Thanks. That's where I got them from, glad I did now...
I went from the jamo a102 speakers and I always loved them but these knock them for 6, they really do.
Yeah it should be fine, I think mine is 2.5 ( it's been a while) but as long as you're not using banana clips you should be OK, it's awkward to fit but it's neat when it's done.I’ve seen reviews of the Q7000i (including the AVF one) that mention the speaker terminals are quite small and fiddly.I was hoping to use my current Van Damme Blue cable which is 2.5mm, do you think the Q7000i terminals will accept this size speaker cable? Brilliant, thank you. Just waiting for RS to drop the price again nowYeah it should be fine, I think mine is 2.5 ( it's been a while) but as long as you're not using banana clips you should be OK, it's awkward to fit but it's neat when it's done.
