It will interesting to see Steve Withers' opinion on the Dolby Vision aspect of this release. Overall I'm very pleased but I have noticed some rapid brightness fluctuations in the opening credits where the stylised host appears on the white background. I assume that this is down to Dolby Vision but have yet to watch using HDR10. This is on a LG OLED55E6V with the OPPO UDP-203.

I'll add something when I get a chance but it's interesting that there's no mention of Dolby Vision anywhere on the packaging or in the promotion of this release.

An interesting show with some good plot twists as mentioned.

Very intriguing to hear how little difference there is to standard Blu Ray.

Reviews of discs such as this just make me happier with my current 1080p set up, albeit I watched this on Now TV via an old Apple TV so it would have been only 720 I’m assuming.

Seems crazy in 2017 that Sky throttle back to 720 and BBC local news is still not HD when amateur filming on You Tube is so much clearer?

At least BBC remembered to switch on the Dolby Digital for Blue Planet 2 via Freeview (they seemed to forget for Planet Earth 2)?

At last! A Dolby Vision encoded release that I actually want. :)

Exactly the reason I shelled out for the overpriced (IMHO) red tin from amazon.

Does anyone know if the uk bluray release (1080p) has the Atmos track? I don't want to shell out almost double for a 2 K upscale .

      Thanks

That's a shame why not put the Atmos track on if they have gone to the bother of mixing one.

It might make them more money by pushing those wanting Atmos to the UHD disc.

Oh come on guys .... another 10 for the series itself? This is getting a tad ridiculous. Yes its a very strong first series ... but a 10? There at least 2 really slow episodes. An 8 for me.

The dreaded 2K DI strikes again. I wonder if they'll be upscaling 2K to 8K when that finally appears.

I chose my 4K discs pretty wisely. My recent purchases are ET, Close Encounters, and Blade Runner. All are real full fat 4K, and they all look incredible.

7 for me. I thought it really went off the rails by the end and felt like it had run out of steam. It's a decent show, but it's a long way from the Game of Thrones replacement HBO were hoping for.

I noticed this too, also in the scene with Anthony Hopkins when he is sharing a drink with one of the older hosts in the basement. I watched on a Samsung UE65KS9000 and Oppo 203.

Since getting my second Dolby Vision enabled disk - Spider-Man: Homecoming and not experiencing any brightness issues I’ve done some digging into the problem with the Westworld disks.

Viewing the scene mentioned by Simon F on my OPPO as Dolby Vision, HDR10 and 1080p blu-ray all show brightness fluctuations. So I’ve concluded that it is the way the disk has been authored rather than any issue with Dolby Vision.

That was my thinking last night too, although I didn't take the time to check the BD discs at the same time stamp. Appreciate you posting your results. It's odd no one else has mentioned this though if it's contained within the disc.

I’ve just checked the digital download version and that has the same fluctuations. I watched the series via SkyGo catchup when first broadcast. Shows how poor that service is for me not to have noticed it then.

I compared standard bluray to Dolby Vision format and one must be half blind not to see the difference. Sure some shots look somewhat soft looking, like lens was out of focus, but it's very occasional and it is the same in both formats. For everything else, DV tramples all over 1080HD!

I've just started working through this set before I embark on season 2 and, my goodness, it looks gorgeous - especially the HDR effect on the night scenes with torches and campfires.

And that's just HDR10 - although my TV supports DV, my player doesn't sadly.
