Emma (mrs Taz) and I have decided to import a Jap Game Cube. We are getting it for a good price and fast delivery with all relevant adaptors. We will post a review as soon as it arrives.

Check out the Resident Evil remakes on GameCube at www.ign.com!

They look the Nutz! I'm getting a gamecube too, but not until next year as most the decent games are not out until then!

    Buns -

The Gamecube was launched in Japan on Friday, so you should now be able to get one on import from any decent games retailers that specialise in importing consoles... Another World is a very good example. Telegames is another, but in my opinion they are over priced. Bear in mind you'll have to pay for the import of the machines.

Your other option right now is to go on ebay and buy one direct from Japan. Price from ebay is about £300 for console and one game. Postage is around $60 from Japan. You also need to remember that you'll need a step down convertor for the power and a tv capable of displaying NTSC signal. The main thing to remember is that you will only be able to play Japanese games on the Jap machines.... fine for things like Wave Race and Luigi's Mansion, but when games come along with lots of in-game text (eg Zelda and other RPG's) it may make playing the game impossible, unless, of course, you understand Japanese!!

    Happy Gaming!

I'd wait for a US one myself, which i am doing infact. Although every console in history has had region mods for it at some point, i've got a feeling that the GC will be a particulary tight system, even the PS2 has taken 18 months for a reliable chip to come out. It's nice an all having stuff early, but it's only 2 months unti lthe US one comes out, and then you get to understand everything in the games. Can you imagine playing the gorgeous Resident Evil Remix in JAP? Nightmare.

Well I just got a GBA, what will these 2 devices achieve when hooked up together ?, is it just that the GBA becomes a controller or is there more goodness to come ?

I'm quite keen on the idea of getting a US import GC. Apart from the fact that you have to order your games from the US (until there's a mod), aer there any other downsides?
Will UK peripherals work, for instance? Are there many games that will get a UK, but not a US release?

    Thanks

lechacal, traditionally UK peripherals do work on import machines, but usually are cheaper to import anyway. This may of course not be the cse with the cube, but I for one wouldn't bet against it. Also it is rumored that the cube may be very easily modded, check out the following link : games radar

SILVERBACK, what would you have expected from the waverace control system? Just curious. I also think you have oversimplified Luigi's Mansion as a poor mans Mario, having read many previews and a couple of reviews, it sounds like a great game in it's own right. Also the control system for that game sounds cool, one stick to move Luigi, another to aim the torch/hoover. However the proof is always in the playing and I hope to discover for myself before the end of November.

As for the X-Box, there aren't any games yet that are getting me excited. Obviously that could all change though and I could end up with both systems, stranger things have happened.

sorry i worded it wrong what i meant was i was expecting so much more from a 5 year old game on a 128 bit next gen console.also i noticed clipping of the graphics when i was playing my mates.i would have thought some new ideas would have been more than reasonable to expect aswell.and by the way my mate said after playing it for a while he noticed that the tracks he had completed are the same as his old n64 version now that is very poor dont you think.i have no loyalty at all when it comes to games consoles so i really dont mean to nintendo bash etc.im just pointing out that the first games are of very low quality.also i cant remember the last time nintendo has released a console without a mario game at launch.an believe me from what i have seen of luigi they really should have gone for mario.no doubt when i get my xbox i will be just as critical lol there is no pleasing some people

Just an update on our GC situation - after quite a bit of deliberating, for's/againsts and actually playing one, we have decided to try and wait until the US released mid November. The thing that swayed us most was probably the Jap text problem...we really don't fancy our gameplay being ruined coz we can't understand what's going on in the game!

I recently played Luigi's Mansion and Wave Race on the GC at my local video games store.... I came away a little disappointed because I wasn't as "wowed" as I wanted to be by it.. Sure, the light effects (Luigi's Mansion) and the water (Wave Race) etc were very good, but overall it did not make me wanna spend all my hard earned savings on one.... shame...

..and is it just me, or was Wave Race rather unresponsive??

    Thats the problem I'm having.

The jump from Mega drive to playstation was a huge one. With 3D polygon graphics, better sound etc.

The upgrade from PSX and N64 to DC, GC, PSX2 or XBOX has less of a wow factor. All they're doing is smoothing out the graphics, reducing popup and giving you the ability to play dvd or connect to the web or whatever.

I realise I'm simplifying things a bit. I do think PSX2 games will get better next year, as it always takes a few years for the developers to work out how to eek out the best in a console.

Personnally I don't think the new gen are going to sell as well as the PSX generation.

PS I have a DC and am waiting tosee what happens to the rest ...The DC is great. I picked up Shenmue at the weekend for 20 quid - 4 discs worth of game!!!

i have a dreamcast aswell and im very pleased with it the games are so much better than what the ps2 has.the only thing is i love footie games and when you talk footie you talk ISS EVOLUTION now that would look sweet on the dreamcast.maybe BLEEMCAST will do a conversion for dreamcast but im not gonna buy a ps2 for maybe 3 games.my tip is the xbox for the crown and i have been saying this for a while now.like i said above the first games are amazingly poor from nintendo and i cant remember when nintendo didnt have a amazing game at release

Wise move that Emma, waiting for the US release.
I have played the Jap one and all though the machine itself seems very good, especially the controller, the release titles are a bit poor.

waverace is a good game but not worth the entrance fee of £300 (on import) and luigi is awful. And this is from someone who believes the big N can do no wrong.

I tried playing it but after the 5th room I had had enough, just so boring, a game for the kids i think.

Also look at the release schedules for the different regions, the Jap system has about 3 or 4 more titles this year, whereas the US machine has about 15, 6 of which look like they could be worth playing.

would be grateful for best import prices on US machine that anyone has seen , £160 at dvdboxoffice.com , is the best so far i think.
