Weird Sony Bravia Display Issue

We've been enjoying our 46" Sony LCD a lot, the picture is very clear and bright. Previously we had the cable box and a PS3 hooked directly into it, and both looked amazing.

Today I plugged both into the Onkyo 605, and have one HDMI cable going from the 605 to the TV. I notice that the picture is darker coming through the Onkyo.

How can this be? I thought HDMI>HDMI was pure digital signal, how is it being made darker as it passes through the Onkyo?

I have a Sony KDL-46W4500 and a Yamaha DSP-AX763.

I get similar issue to you in that the extreme whites and extreme blacks (visible on eg pixar blu-ray AV setup) are clipped when sending the picture through the HDMI on the amp.

I agree, it shouldn't do it. very annoying - especially as the amp got excellent reviews.....
