Has anyone had a strange noise emanate from their DVD recorder?
It is related to RAM discs when either recording or playing back and the best I can describe it is like breaking wind.
It happened an a Panasonic brand ram disc, and assumed the disc was faulty so just binned the disc. Now it's happening on a new Ram disc in a caddy.
It never happens when playing back a commercial film disc.
Is it likely to be faulty media?
The only other thing I can think is that maybe belts are slipping (not techie enough to know whether this is a daft idea), but as it never happens on pre-recorded discs I kind of rule this out.
Any ideas?

I find that the Panasonic RAM discs I have used seem to be a lot noisier than the Ridisc ones. I don't think any harm will come of it. I think they just make that noise due to the spinning action.

I think I know the noise you are referring to ... and I think your anaysis is correct. The disk speed arrests suddenly ... and the disk clamp loses its grip momentarily on the spinning disk.

It makes me uncomfortable!... It often presages recording failures .. when the optical link between laser and disk fails.

Albeit I only occasionally use RAM ... I get this noise when burning DVD-R's sometimes.

Prerecorded disks are produced in a completely different way and are eminently more 'readable' by the laser. Hence your lack of problem with them.

i hate to be the bearer of bad news but it sound to me like your laser is on its way out. from what you are describing it sounds like the laser is losing focus and the spindle motor is losing lock.
this will show up on ram discs first as they have poor reflectivity compared to pre-stamped commercial discs.

if the unit is still under warranty i would get it checked out by a dealer.

I hope you're wrong, but if you're right why doesn't it manifest itself with -R discs?

if you have a look at the under side of a retail disc, a dvd-r and a ram disc side by side you will notice that the reflectivity of all three a different, ram being the poorest will need a laser upto its best to record and read from. as the laser output drops you will find it has problems with -r and eventually retail stampd discs.
