I just came across a minor problem with the good old WD TV Live Media Player. They are getting a bit long in the tooth but as a media player they are pretty good (some versions are better than others).

A friend rang me to say his new HDD wasn't showing any of the MP4s that were recorded on it and he might have bought a faulty HDD Would I check it?

It actually didn't take long to find the problem, the new drive was formatted with exFAT and apparently the WD devices can only read NTFS or FAT32 so it was a relatively easy fix to reformat it as a NTFS drive. It would have been easier if the several Gb of videos had not to be copied from and back to the drive.

If you still use these WD Media players and you buy a new HDD it might be worth checking the default formatting used on that drive before you use it.
