WD TV Live Hub Media Center 1TB

review on amazon says

File Transfers

There are two USB ports that can be used to load the Live Hub from non-networked drives, or files can be transferred via Ethernet. Which is quicker? Transfering a 688MB file took 8 minutes 40 seconds via USB, the same file took 9 minutes 55 seconds to transfer via Ethernet. My router only supports 100Mb Ethernet, which gives a maximum capacity of 12.5MB/s less network overheads, and possibly having a gigabit network would have made a difference, but I am not sure of that due to the hard drive/network interface speed limitations that every networker is familiar with. Whichever way you go about it, even half-filling the Live Hub's 1TB drive is going to take many hours.

I just transferred a a 1.9gb file over ftp,, all house browsing internet and/or watching wd tv live in bed,,, in just under 2.30min.. ?

The reviews on amazon are so off putting,,

Most of them down to user error,, we bought an lg tv,, and the reviews on there (all rubbish) contradicted to all the reviews on the forums here,, and its a lovely set for the money,,

The thing about plugs, my dad bought a router from pc world, and he claimed it had a USA plug,, some plugs have an adapter that slot on or turn,, if they are selling to world markets,, so that's odd.. Never had that myself, except for the revo from China,,

The bloke who bought it for a charity,, then took it home and uses it, ,thats charitable!!! lol,,

must be the speck of snow that fell last night,, and its all gone now!!!

I am trying to work out what is the difference between this and the one without the 1TB drive. I have already got an external hard drive so I don't want to buy this if it's not a big improvement on the model without a hard drive.

According to this iboum.com : Future Entertainment Technology : WDTV Live Hub 1TB (WDBABZ0010BBK) 'the player software is a big improvement over the original. You get a media scraper built into the player allowing you to catalogue and easily search all your content' but according to a review on Amazon the software is USA based what ever that means!

Its not a big improvement in the type of files it plays,, but the stock gui is a lot slicker and looks very responsive, it has a basic movie scraper, however some of the apps, like blockbuster,, may be restricted to usa region,, it also has a top of the range hard drive..

Wd are encouraging third party development,, skins ,, themes ,, etc,,

gui,, here,, YouTube - WDTV Live Hub Media Center UI DEMO

However, the wd tv live,, has most of the hub features,, and can be very easily modded,, to upgrade the gui, and to display full info movie sheets/video wall...

I have seen the wd tv live and this does look a lot slicker and more responsive. Does having the HD integrated make a difference? In other words the wd tv live has to get the media from an external hard drive and it must take longer to find each file externally rather than internally.

In real world times. you wouldn't notice, i leave mine on all the time, and it seems fine,, although mine is modded..

i find an external drive makes the wd tv portable,, and its easier to do maintenance on the drive,, or just to swap it over , or move it....

I really like the look of this machine, the WD HD Live just looks a bit like a toy, the Hub looks more like a piece of AV kit.

Have been looking around at media players for some time, since I sold on my HTPC (decided an HTPC was overkill for just playing back films on my TV). Currently I just use my laptop, has an HDMI port and will play anything I throw at it in smooth 1080p. I just hook it up to a spare HDMI cable on either the TV in the lounge or the bedroom and away you go. No nice UI though (being a Dell XPS it has a little remote), I just use windows to find the file and play it back.

Was looking at the new Sony player, but lots of people hailing the WD options, so taking a look, so nice to see a thread on these. Not started looking at the available mods for the WD HD Live yet.

Shame they don't sell the 'hub' without the HD in it, so you can fit your own, or just make the HD Live more attractive!

Are the modded firmwares for the HD Live really that good, anywhere to go looking for info?

Cheers.

Am sure people will start the same thing on the Hub once it becomes a little more widely available.

Would be nice if they did C4OD, iPlayer etc - is a secondary requirement really, but I liked the idea when I read about those services on machines like the Sony.

If WD bring out more UK specific firmwares, so one box did all then it would be awesome!

Going to have a read of that link now!

They had to make this cheaper didn't they? As a wdtv live plus 1tb could be had for about £130, And that's all this is, just a wd tv live with an added 1tb disk. And of course all the fixes and mods they realize were needed for the previous models are in this one.
They want to encourage modders and community but if they weren't so quick to abandon all support for previous models maybe people might take them seriously, but who's to say they wont bring out another model in six months.
Never buy anything on the promise of what it might have, but on what it does now.

FWIW this has the Sigma 8654 chipset and the other one has the Sigma 8655 iboum.com : Future Entertainment Technology : HD Media Player Comparison Grid I would have thought the 8655 would be better than the 8654!

Yeah. its a bit of a no brainer now, to buy a live and a hard drive, as the 1gb ext. hard drives hovering around 45-50,,,unless you need the flexibility of a separate drive,,

With the WDTV...can I assume you download movies to the hard drive over the LAN or does it plug into your PC and you, in effect, just drag and drop your files ?

And just because I can't see it in any obvious place like the specs it transcodes .mkv, for instance, to what ever format your TV takes ? Its another possible option for me alongside the WDTV Live HD and the Playon range.... getting much more interested in having a separate, dedicated, media streamer so I don't need my PC on

Finally got this yesterday and after playing around with it for several hours I'm well happy :)

The built in movie scraper is excellent and found alloy files straight away. The GUI is smooth and pretty to look at. I've so far only managed to copy files to the internal drive via USB. Its not yhe fastest transferring from usb though. Can't seem to do it from the pc. It picked up my network straight away and the ps3.

It plays back brrips at 720p to perfection. Looking better than the ps3 did.

Not sure yet how to setup a separate folder for tv series yet or verbena scraper to pull over each episode info. I will try it sourcing from a 2tb drive soon when my elements hdd turns up.

Overall very happy bunny :)
