    Hi,

I have my PS3 connected by a HDMI cable to a Panny PX70 capable of 720p and 1080i I think.

However, when i put a normal dvd (not a blue ray) into my ps3, it seems to always play them at 576p. Is there a way I can override this to upscale it? If so how and what would be the best thing to play them on?

    thanks,

No upscaling for DVD's is possible at present.

They may include this functionality in a future update though.

Thanks, all new to this up/down scaling thing.

So does that mean that I can only watch DVDs in 576p ?

Or should I try to change the options for 720p or 1080i/p? If so, will there be there any noticable difference in picture quality?

For Blue Rays, what is resolution?

DVD's will only playback in 576p no matter what resolution you have the PS3 set to.

For BR's set the PS3 to 1080i for your screen. BR's won't playback in 720p and if you don't set the PS3 to 1080i it will downscale them to 480p.

the ps3 will only play dvds at 576p, not at 720p/1080i (unless an update is brought out). you could get an upscaling dvd player for a decent price these days. i have one and i think my ps3 is better ;) ! Blurays only play in 1080i/P, so you have to set your ps3 to 1080i, i had mine at 720p, so the ps3 downscaled to 480p, i was happy with the picture. i then realised it was downscaled and selected 1080i and was amazed with the quality !! :smashin:

I tried Terminator2 SD DVD in my brothers upscaling hdmi player, then my PS3 over HDMI. The PS3 was just as good.

MInd you haven't tried it with my copy of Alligator2:The Mutation, that might show up a bit different :)

Just shows that sometimes the TV can upscale just as good as the new fangled dvd players!

My xbox360 (now swapped for a ps3) upscaled sd dvds better than my samsung upscaling dvd player.

Ps3 seems ok but not as good as the xbox 360 over vga.

The PX70 should be able to take a 1080p source if I remember correctly so it would be better to feed it that for blu ray and games if they support it

The benefit of an upscaling dvd player depends largely on the standard of the upscaler in the television it is feeding.

Panasonics are good at scaling so the results you achieve from feeding it a 576p signal and letting the tv scale that image could well be just as good, if not better, than letting a dvd player upscale it first, especially as the tv would have to scale it again to its own resolution anyway.

Everything you watch on your panny will be being displayed at the native resolution of the screen whatever you feed it, with the screen scaling the image.

It is easier to downscale an image than to upscale one as you will be losing information rather than trying to create it which is why blu ray will look a lot better than dvd.

Not all games are at 1080p, in fact most are at 720p
