The race is soon to start over at PriceJapan with the 1st shipments of the AE500 due to go out on 14th October. The Z2 looks like it'll start around the 21st October and pricing for both is extremely close.

Based on the knowledge given so far which pj are you lot going to go for?

Too soon to say, specs are very similar, at the end of the day it's gonna come down to a) PQ b) Reliability c) noise levels. I like the lens shift of the Z2 and I like the sound of the smoothscreen of the AE500 as I'll be sitting only 9ft or so from my screen. I also like the side air vents on the Z2 so it can be mounted near the back wall. I'm leaning towards the Z2 at the moment but I'm waiting for reviews before making my (informed) decision.

    Cheers

Pricejapan now suggesting that Z2 may be delayed past the 21st.

And their prices the HS20 is only £600 more .. very tempting.

Im awaiting the Z2. Looks like it will be in the UK (officially) months sooner than the AE500, and I will find the side venting very, very handy, even though I will miss the smoothscreen! I would buy an AE500 from PJ, but Im extremely wary of the customs/warranty issues.

With the increase in resolution on the Z2 wouldnt that reduce the screen door anyway.

Would it be correct to assume, in terms of screen door, that AE300 would out perform Z1 with smoothscreen, Z2 will outperform AE300 because of increase in resolution and ae500 will outperform Z2 because of smoothscreen and increased resolution.

If thats the case isnt smooth screen just overkill and youll be able to say things like "look no screen door" from 5cm away which ist of any practical use.

Actually my argument could be flawed as I suppose screen door is dependent on "pixel : pixel spacing" ratio rather than resolution.

The new Epson panels that I have read are in the Z2, AE500 and TW200 have a 'fill ratio' of 60%.

    http://www.epson-ed.info/EDEX2003/prdct_e/dream4.html

This compares favourably to older LCD PJs, but not to DLP (80% or so) or DiLA/LCOS (>90%).
I would guess the higher res would make it similar to an HS10, which to my eyes need slight defocusing to remove all traces of screen door, but does not impact on picture quality at all.

I like the words "cheaper faster", so the manufacturers are paying less but charging us more!!! I suppose thats business.

So a combination of increased fill ratio 7% and 50% increase in resolution would mean the screen door should mean the width of the screendoor will be reduced by about 40%, but on the other hand there will be 50% more lines to see.

Why am I worried about this? I cant demo one whatever I will see will be replacing a 29 inch telly, so regardless a panny500 or Z2 will be a major step forward!

On the one hand this forum is a god send, on the other hand its making me paranoid before Ive even got my hands on one!

snowman, they are Japanese units, so e.g. AE500 won't have a scart contact, as in the AE300 bought from them when it was launched. Voltage is for Japan but it can handle UK voltage as well though, if you search here or avsforum, you will find loads of information on Pricejapan and the projectors.

Loads of avsforum (North America) has bought from them.

but make note that searching on avs for pricejapan is not likely to do much good since they dont actually allow you to name retailers.
