This is very strange because MS have never let it be sold as user-installable. They have just annnounced I think that MCE 2005 will be such, however I think it has some recording functionality removed, but I've seen no announcement saying the 2004 edition is retailable like this.

If it's legit then I think it's MS selling off old stock before gearing up for the 2005 version.

It is legit, it was announced on the Register. It's obviously because they haven't done that well with 2004. 2005 will be HD-TV compatible but won't be able to record / timeshift!!! Wow, thats worth it

The only Register article I've seen is this one, and that says next year, it also says it's the 2005 edition.

Moreover, the Overclockers page says it's the OEM 2004 version, M$ don't allow OEM versions of XP to be sold unaccompanied so it's hard to see them allowing this variant to do so.

If it is legit it doesn't add up to any announcement M$ have made that I've seen.

It's for sale at Ebuyer as well. I was also under the impression that it would never be released on it's own

Is there somewhere that explains what UK TV cards are supported by MCE ( specifically any UK DVB Terrestrial TV cards )

Also, can MCE pause live TV, and does it have an EPG with "series links" for setting repeat recordings not based on repeating time but based on the next episode of a series ?

The comments I'm seeing about the retail version make me doubt it's worth getting, as usual it seems M$ try to do everything anybode else does and end up doing it less well.

Somewhat more positive than the couple of reviews I saw elsewhere I agree .. but to repeat my earlier comment, this review is for the 2005 version, the product being sold by Overclockers is the older 2004 one and the changelist for 2005 is not minor IIRC.

whoops I didn't spot that this was a review for the 2005 edition
It looks like it would be well worth the wait for the new version rather than get the 2004 edition.

In view of its lack of success, MS relaxed their policy regarding MCE some time ago and decided to make it generally available to system integrators in OEM package via authorised distributors; AFAIK there is no retail version.

I've just received my Microsoft Action Pack update and it includes Media Centre ..... and it appears to be the 2005 version :)
I can't wait to give this a try.

    john,

Didn`t know about this "Action Pack" till now, just looked on their website and it doesnt show Media Center as one of the listed components, but boy, you do get a lot for your money!!

Have you got a different subscription for this , or did they just put it in anyhow?

    Many Thanks

    Nathan.

p.s sorry for hi-jacking the thread!!

It's arrived as part of the October update and comes as a complete surprise to me. I haven't tried to load it yet as I need to make sure the hardware I put it on is compatible and does it justice. I'll try booting up with it later to see which version of Media Centre it is.

I've noticed eBuyer now have the 2005 edition listed, whereas the link earlier in this thread was for the 2004 edition (spit).

    eBuyer quick links codes are:

    74686 - Microsoft Media Centre 2005 OEM - £82 inc vat
77109 - The remote control for it - £23 inc vat

Another review here (with lots of pics and details of the setup process):

    http://www.anandtech.com/multimedia/showdoc.aspx?i=2240

    Forum here:

    http://www.xpmce.com/

I was initially interested in this, but not sure if it'll work with my hardware (haven't found a definitive list of hardware that'll work yet, though I haven't tried very hard), so I'm going to try Showshifter with DigiGuide, and maybe TheaterTek or ZoomPlayer, and see how I get on.

Sorry guys, but if you want quality then MCE2K5 is not the way to go!

    MCE2K5 HCL:-

There's a long list of standard Radeon & nVidia graphics cards, so compatibility shouldn't be a problem in this respect.

    BUT the TV Tuners/PVRs :-

    ATI ATI HDTV Wonder PCI
Hauppauge WinPVR 250 MCE (Amity Harbor NTSC ) Part # 32552
    Hauppauge WinPVR 250 MCE (Amity Harbor PAL) Part #s 32554 (PAL B/G); 32559, 32569 (PAL/SECAM)
nVidia NVTV P179 PAL and NTSC

No support for high quality video capture via RGB/component.
