Just a quick warning for anyone purchasing any of the Fox DVDs which are on special offer as part of the "5 Star Value Collection".

I purchased Air Force One which, it turns out, is a flipper with half the movie on one side and then half the movie on the other. Personally I thought DVD9 technology was sufficiently advanced and economical to mean flippers were a thing of the past but, it seems, they are not.

It may be common knowledge that Air Force One was like this but, if so, the info had passed me and I just thought I post this warning so people can check before they pick up a Fox title.

Yes - Region 2, UK releases. It could just be Air Force One (I also got the Blue Max which isn't a flipper) but I thought I would post it anyway just so people can make sure before they part with their cash.

It could well be but it's part of the Fox led promotion at the moment - at least it came with a "5 Star Value Collection" sticker on it the same as Blue Max and several other I ordered.

Oh dear - I'm really not doing well from this cheap Fox offer! I haven't watched Blue Max yet - and won't until next week - if it's cut I'll post it.

Since it is on Superbit, doesn't that automatically mean that it was released by Columbia Tristar?

The Air Force One that you have just bought is a generation one disc, it was replaced soon after with a dual layered copy. This also affected movies like Con Air and Face/Off which again have been replaced by the movie distributors.

I would demand my money back as surely that old flipper copy should no longer even be in cirulation on store shelves.

Yes I took it back - HMV were perfectly happy for me to exchange it. However it is pretty poor that such disks are still sold.

Err, well yes....but....aren't SALES supposed to be events in which retailers offload, for hugely reduced prices, stuff they have a surplus of, can't get rid of at normal rates, or they have bought in specially from someone else (say a distributor) who has exactly the same problem? I must say, I always have that expectation.

True - but it's been almost THREE YEARS since such disks were regarded as marketable. Now DVD has 'grown up', a Watchdog campaign forced many disks to be reissued and DVD9 technology is now dirt cheap selling such disks is outrageous.

Your expectation is sadly wrong Nigel. Many retailers, particularly in clothing buy in poor quality stock for "sales". Many women rush to **** sales, and unless they are regular shoppers don't realise the clothes have never been sold via **** shops (and are not surplus or unsold stock) and are much poorer quality materials but with **** labels sew in. It's one of the oldest and best know retail "sale" tricks; that way they don't have to discount high quality gear and people think they are a getting a bargin, but it's high margin on low quality rubbish.

I got done with "Goodfellas" from an online retailer -- guess I didn't read the small print -- it was so cheap, but I was very annoyed with a single layer flipper arrived.

I have that expectation, too. I just didn't think it relevant in this context.

Isn't it almost exactly the same context here?

I imagine that these are old and returned stock, bulk purchased, new printed materials for DVD case, and shipped out again as "value" or "sale" versions.

I recently picked up a couple of DVDs for Mrs StooMonster that were clearly original edition of DVD itself but budget distributor packaging -- after all it's only a print collateral change -- and were on sale for £5 or so.

Luckily was proper aspect ratio and anamorphic and DTS, but had to check packaging to be sure.

Rasczak, I'd be interested to hear about edge enhancement on The Blue Max. I've got the R1 version, and on that it's very noticeable in scenes with planes silhouetted against the sky.
