Bit of a long story this, but be warned if you want to buy from Empire Direct .co.uk. I ordered a Rotel power amp 3 weeks ago from empire direct .co.uk. They said that they would have to order one from Rotel. They debited my credit card after a few days. They said that it would take a week to get the amp in stock. A week went by, still nothing. phoned them back, said it would arrive in stock next Monday. By this time i was ****ed off with the whole thing. Anyway I stuck with it as it was the cheapest place I could find in shops and the internet. I booked a whole week off work so I would be in to sign for it as Empire said they would not leave it a the local postal office. I waited in all day for it to arrive, but it didnt. Phoned Empire again, the same bloke said it would be with me Thursday of the same week as the amp got misdirected somehow. Thursday i phoned the courier service to find out if it was coming. no amp to be delivered! I was fuming at this point, so i phone empire again only to be told that the amp still hadn't come in from Rotel. I said to the guy at empire that he promised ity would be with me thursday( same guy i spoke to all the time)
He denied all of it saying he worked with the company for 7 years and would never say anything like that. Anyway, I said I would contact the magazines to say what a shoddy service they provide. The guy at empire said they had thousands of happy customers, so why do i get shoddy service?, and doing so would be a waste of my time. I cancelled my order even though they made quite a bit of interest on my money. I got one from Audio T (ex demo, and £150 more, but still get what i want. The internet may be cheap , but do you really get good service as well.

Empire are OK as long as they have what you want in stock. It's wise to check this first. I ordered a Sony amp and DVD from them. The amp came promptly but the DVD never arrived and after weeks and many calls I cancelled and bought it in the high street. It's a shame because I won't buy from then again. If they had said that they were having problems getting one in the first place I wouldn't have minded but they debit your card and string you along while they wait for it to come in. Not good.

NEVER SHOP WITH E D IF THEY ARE OUT OF STOCK, BECAUSE THEY TAKE YOUR MONEY BEFORE YOU GET IT.
AFTER 5 WEEKS I ASK FOR A REFUND AND WAITED ALMOST 2 WEEKS TO GET MY MONEY BACK.

I've been waiting 6 weeks for a Philips widescreen tv and a Marantz av receiver from Unbeatable.co.uk. They may be cheap but the service stinks. If I haven't heard from them by Monday next week I'll be cancelling.

They took over a month to deliver my denon amp after they assured me I would get it in 4 days which I duly booked off from my job. Then one day out of the blue four weeks later I got a call at work from the courier asking me why I wasn't there to sign for it.

Call me naive - but any shop that takes your money prior to having the goods ready to be shipped is truly missing any level of customer satisfaction goals - they might as well stick a large banner announcing "All we want is your cash." I see on empiredirect's web site that they are trying to be the online alternative to Currys, Dixons etc. It appears that they are succeeding in ways they may not have planned for.

Their T&C's do state that the charges are payable at the "time of placing your order." I've not seen this before on any site, but perhaps its more common than I believe. I know I'll avoid them, in the main thanks to you pointing this out.

To me its like a specialist HiFi shop asking for a swipe of your credit card prior to going into their demo room. No thank you.

Online stores should be cheaper, they don't have the overheads of expensive, knowledgeable staff (one hopes), and shop's rentals to deal with. But this does not mean you should expect bad service from them either. I would not expect them to be able to answer detailed product questions, but able to supply the stock in a efficient and courteous manner.

Specialist HiFi shops can provide this advice, and its very unlikely that you would walk away from one unhappy with your purchase, since you've auditioned it with your own musical/visual tastes. Any decent shop will also offer audition equipment that may not be on your list, but something that you may prefer, at a similar price.
But of course all this costs money. Call it an insurance policy against buying a dud.

I actually use both, I much prefer the HiFi shop experience, but sometimes I just cannot justify the markup this entails.

Sorry if you are all learning to suck eggs out there with my rant, but I hate poor customer service. No matter the price - its not as if we are forcing the vendors to sell at the price they are offering, its up to them to provide a decent level of service. There is not enough business out there to loose the chance of returning customers.

Are there other online companies that charge before they are ready to ship, so I can avoid them too?

I may be wrong but I thought it was against the law to charge a credit card before despatch of goods???

I looked at Empire for a reciever as they advertised a brand new thechnics £70 cheaper than my local dealer who are overpriced but very good, my plan was to demo the whole lot at the dealer then order from empire, the dealer ****ed me around, must have thought a student could afford a £500 setup, well i got fed and rang empire they told me two weeks delivery, i said id call in two weeks and order. from then it took the dealer 6 weeks to get the item into stock Matsu****A living up tp their name, empire still advertised it in stock, moral of the story always phone them first, Bought a Panasonic VCR no problem £20 less than comet and no saturday pounding the high street.

Read this string with interest, as I had similar (but not as bad) experiences with ED. I just won't accept debiting my card until the product's shipped now.
Anyway, the point of this posting is that in my experience there is always a cheaper and better price available than Empire Direct - I recently bought a Denon AVR1802 for only £299 from a great shop in Ruislip with real people in it! Empires price was £50 higher and they didn't have it in stock etc etc

I ordered a Panasonic 32PL20 widescreen tv, they delivered it on time. Unfortunately the TVC had a fault, i eventually got through to their customer services, who passed me back thorugh to sales to place an order for another model. I went the extra few hundred and got the 36PL30.

Now the next bit is crucial!!

They charged me for the second set, fine. They agreed to delver the new set and pick up the faulty one at the same time. I requested that the courier call before they turn up, as i could see this turning into a nightmare.

On the expected delivery day I was at work and got a call saying that they were within an hour from my home. I took an early lunch popped home, they did the swap and i was back at my desk all within 90 minutes.

I received a call from customer services later in the week saying they acknowledged the fault with the TV and i would be refunded for the first set within 3 days. 3 days later, money is back in my bank. All sorted!!

All in all a pleasant ride, with the minor problem of actually getting thorugh to customer services which could take over 30 minutes.
    :p

I have had delivery problems with Hifijunkies.co.uk. I placed an order online for a Yamaha DVD a couple of week ago and as soon as I confirmed the order I received a confirmation email. This was all looking good but, a week later, still no sign of delivery. So I phoned them and was told we are very busy but my item will be delivered on 21/12/01. The day came and went and still no DVD. So I phoned again. This time they could not find my online order and I therefore had to give them all my details again and was assured that the DVD player would be delivered on 24/12/01. This time it was OK, so the moral is don't order online as they haven't quite got it right so ring instead. Good news is they did not take my money until the goods were dispatched which I think is the most important thing when purchasing anything online as it shows a commitment to deliver. I would buy from them again as they are very competitive on price.
