My passat performs well - I put my foot down, the turbo kicks in and away we go but this only happens reliably when the engine is cold to warm. Once its up to temperature, the turbo mostly doesn't cut in at all. I can make it cut in by putting my foot down and then rapidly releasing and reinstating full throttle (all in about half a second). This usually (but not always) causes the turbo to kick in.

Any ideas why this might be and what to do about it or is it a VW dealer job?

thx

common faults with passats are the egr's i think they are called. They monitor the amont of air the engine take in. Not very sure as i'm a sparky myself. But knowits round that area.

First up you need to find somebody with a copy of Vagcom so they can read the fault log from the ECU.

Usually on the 1.8t it's the MAF that gives problems, this can be fixed with a clean or if that does not work it will need replacing.

Try a google search, it's a well known fault discussed on many VW / Audi / Seat / Skoda forums.
