Can somebody please measure up the visible screen height and width, on their 37" and 42" Panasonic plasmas?

Can you quote width and height in cm? on respective models.

I'm trying to compare against my current screen; I do have one of those Panny brochures with overall unit areas on, but this doesn't give an idea of screen area.

Also, the visible diagonal is 37 & 42. It's not like CRTs.

What do you mean 'not like CRT's' ?

CRT's size is also taken as a diagonal measurement.

For example for both flat panel & CRTs they may be classed as a 32 inch screen when in actual fact in some cases you find this is not correct and that the diagonal distance which contains the picture is less than the 32 inches quoted.

For the Panasonic 42 inch screen the PX series quotes the diagonal visible size of 106 cm (less than 42 inches) & the PH9 series is 105.6cm (which is just over 41.5 inches).

Though I don't quite understand how both screen manage to have the same resolution when one is 0.4cm less than the other

A true 42 inch visible area screen would have a diagonal measurement of 106.7cm.

If a manufacturer says the visible screen size is 127cm diagonal, then this is spot on 50 inches.

CRTs quoted screen size is the size of the tube. Part of the tube is hidden under the plastic. This is why a 32" CRT generally has a visible sceen size of about 30".

It's far, far closer than it was with CRTs though. And it's within error margins considering they only use inches for historic reasons.
