    What time did you test?
    I get around 4-10Mb between 7pm - 1am.
    +12Mb any other time.

i was only getting upto5mb on my 20mb line so i called up virgin after being shuffled around for over 45mins (costing over 15pounds in phone bills) they agreed to send an engineer out to test or replace box. When arrived he said i was getting the 20mb service but the samsung set top box(which was installed a year earlier when 10mb came out)couldnt handle the speeds. He couldnt authorize installing a cable modem, he had to get a managers permission, he took my mobile number said the manager would get in touch. Its no surprise to me that i havent had any phone call nothing. Same old crappy service when it was ntl.

Best way to test your speed.

In Google, search for "gamefiles". First link should take you to Blueyonder games. Start downloading a couple of the large demos. Add together the transfer rates of the downloads to get your speed. (You can cancel the downloads once you have worked out your speed.)

I am on BB XL, have a Surfboard 4100 modem connected to a Linksys Wireless G router, and usually get download speeds of 1.5 MB/sec or greater.

Try the Virgin Media Broadband forum, rather than the Cable TV forum that you've posted in. :smashin:

Ditch the wireless unless you have a wireless N router.
Wireless will greatly slow down your connection.
Look at my screen shots, one is when i connected wirelessly, and the other was with an ethernet cable.
What a difference it makes, the ethernet cable is twice as fast and downloads four times as fast! (wireless downloads at ~ 500KB/s, whereas on cable i get ~2.1MB/s)
Hence the reason virgin are reluctant to give out wireless routers on a 20Mbps connection.

I get (or used to until landlord decided to move to to M, but have told him to get XL again OR ELSE) full 20meg service, downloads were in the region of 2.4mb/s.

Well I'm on the 20 meg service and have been getting less than 1 meg for the last couple of weeks.

Have tried 2 different laptops running XP and Vista and have hard wired direct to the modem. No difference really at all.

Finally decided to call them tonight, first had the phone put down on me at 7.53 no doubt as the shift was about to end; then on redialing got the other call centre who told me there were problems in my area (there isn't the recorded message said it was an entirely diiferent part of Bristol) and that engineers were working on it and it should be fixed by tomorrow.

When I asked if the engineers had been working on it for 2 weeks plus I didn't get a reply, nor did he understand there was more than one postcode and part of Bristol.

I'll wait until tommorrow to prove a point but I think it's about time I look elsewhere. Problem is I'm pretty sure I'm along way from the exchange and ADSL speeds will be very limited.

Got the XL package in October 08, and getting 19.6 download speed.

Then again, the Fibre Optic box is just outside my garden wall, so only 3-4m of copper wire.

When I upgraded to 20meg some time ago, I was getting at most about 10meg fastest, phoned them up to say I wanted to drop down speed again because it was the same speed I was getting before - they said they will check it out and get back to me, 2 days later a new modem arrived in in the post and now am getting the full 20meg speed.

So the big question... Is it worth the money because it doesn't sound like it?
I currently have Sky broadband 2 meg and speed test says i'm getting 1.76!
    To upgrade or not ?
