Virgin Media to double the speed of customer broadband

BBC News - Virgin Media to double the speed of customer broadband

Virgin Media's upgrade will mean customers currently signed up for 10Mbps will be boosted to 20Mbps, while users on 20Mbps and 30Mbps packages will both be upped to 60Mbps.

Those on 50Mbps will be increased to 100Mbps. Customers already on the top 100Mbps tariff will be raised to 120Mbps - the fastest speed Virgin Media is currently able to provide.

The company said bandwidth usage limits will also be doubled to accommodate the increased speed.
Most customers will not notice the upgrades taking place, nor will any have to pay for the changes to take place, a spokesman said.

However, some users with old modems and other similar hardware will receive new up-to-date equipment free of charge

Any idea if they are going to publish a timetable for which parts of the country will be upgraded when?

I live in Cardiff and currently have the 10 Mbps service, but have been thinking for a couple of months about upgrading to the 30 Mbps service because it occasionally struggles if we're using it on too many devices at the same time (such as using iPlayer in two different rooms at the same time pus an iPhone or two).

If I knew the upgrade from 10 Mbps to 20 Mbps was was just around the corner then I might wait, but if Cardiff's not being upgraded to mid-2013 then I would just upgrade now.

Anyone know when more details might emerge?

    Hi there,

According to the official post: Here

When will my broadband speed be increased?

We’ll be giving everyone a speed boost, but not all at the same time. To find out when your area is being upgraded, we’re putting a postcode checker online which will always have the most up-to-date information. The website will go live on Friday evening; check back here for the URL.

Please note that the post code checker does not apply to 100Mb customers whose boost will be happening from the summer of 2012. We will be writing to you with more information as to when their speed boost will be happening shortly.

    Thanks,
    Dave

Yes read this, my only caveat is that I'm going to be forced into using the superhub. Which, on paper, should have better coverage, better wireless speed etc etc... but I can hear the "dad, my xbox isn't connecting" screams already...

When they've increased speeds in the past it has cause problems in oversubscribed areas, so hopefully they won't make that mistake again. I also wonder if they will increase their ul/dl limits as much as the overall speed. I doubt they will, which will lead to people getting warning letters about overuse of their service..

They should increase 10mb to 30mb though, not 20mb. The bbc article says the EU target for broadband speed in 2020 is 30mb minimum, so this would push the country a lot further towards that, but i guess they have to have somewhere to go with that service a few years from now..

    From the BBC report:-

"The company said bandwidth usage limits will also be doubled to accommodate the increased speed."

oh yeah, missed that. Wonder if that also applies to the secret limits on the 50mb service which they don't advertise and won't tell you what they are..

If this works out it'll be a good deal. I recently paid a fiver extra a month to upgrade from 10 to 20 MB. Sounds like I should end up with 60MB by the time of the upgrade, so a fiver extra for 6 times my original speed is not bad!

If it works out that is...

They might end up doubling it again in a few years time. They do seem to have a habit of increasing peoples broadband speed every few years. So customers who are moving onto 20mb may end up going up to 40/50mb.

I'm already on 100mbps, so what do I get? Nothing! I pay £10 extra a month to receive the same speed as those paying fir 50mbps.

Further I have never gotten above 60mbps, with an engineering visiting and saying he will get back to me. He still hasn't!

I think a phone call is required.

We get a 20% upgrade, bumped up to 120Meg... Like you I think it's an insult considering we pay £10 a month more than the 50Meg customers.

I may just downgrade to 50Meg to save a tenner and then get the FREE upgrade to 100Meg :)

Won't jump the gun yet though as 200meg may be coming? Who knows..

Similar here; I'm on 20mb, and get a good, consistent service and ave speed of around 19.4mb. To get that possibly tripled for nothng is fantastic, especially as I'd been thinking about moving up to 30mb recently anyway. Even if I don't get the full 60mb speeds I'm still better off:thumbsup:
Might ask if they'll do it for free now anyway, since I'll be getting much more in ther not too distant future.

100Mbit customers are going to get the 20% upgrade and a rebate. The price we pay will go down.

Tyical smoke and mirrors job with VM.. Much rather they get what they have now working properly all the time than just trying to fool customers with raw speed figures...

    Smoke and Mirrors?

If you have a problem that isn't fixed and you're still paying them, sounds like you have been fooled.

I on the other hand receive 12.5Mbps throughout the day and night, no problems.

    Where's the post code checker?
I know it's not live yet, but just want to know where to look when it is.
What's the betting i'm due a double speed boost on the 01/12/12?
01/12/12 BT's FTTC goes live in my area! Just a thought.

As I understand it, the current black box modem's are capable of 20mb max - anything over (30mb) will need a superhub. So I'm guessing that switching the 10mb subscribers up to 20mb will reduce the amount of hardware they need to give away for free. And I guess there's a LOT of people on the current (soon to be old) 10mb service, so that should save them a heap of money

Can you still move from 10mb to 20mb?

I didn't know this, thought the next step up was to 30mb.
