Myself and some friends are looking to go on a summer holiday in the sun this year we want to go with a villa but don't really have much knowledge in the area, I've had quick look over James Villas and Thomson there will be four/five of us going. . .

Anyone any advice on getting a good private villa & pool in a good location europe or rest of the world...

James are very good, style are not bad either. You may find better deals on owners abroad or owners direct.

I've been away with James Villas and Villa Plus both of which provided an excellent service but in recent years I've preferred to find and book villas through either Owners Direct or Holiday Lettings and book the flights and car hire seperately as it's cheaper as well as giving more flexibility.

Where depends very much on what you want to do so give us more of a clue

I've used James a couple of times and they are good.

However, in the past I've found that you've got to be very quick of the mark to get particular ones at popular times.

It's almost like that when people stay in a villa they like they immediately book it for next year.

When we looked through the brochure we would circle 5 to 10 we liked and then check on availability. In each case they had always been taken so we ended up with one much further down our list - and we were booking quite early.

Having said that, with the credit crunch and the strength of the Euro it might be a very different situation now.

    Cheers,

    Nigel

not sure what a package costs but my experience of villas (2 weeks) is around £4.5k for the villa and flights and then probably £1.5k on top for eating out etc. Obviously you can do that cheaper if you cook in the villa. This is for family of 4 in somewhere like Menorca

Not if you look around carefully. Last summer we rented a luxury three bedroomed villa with pool near Paphos for £1,500 for the fortnight. Flights for the three of us were a shade over £1,000 plus a couple of hundred pounds for car hire for the fortnight. Food is as much or as little as you care to spend.

Checking on the Thomas Cook website it would seem that self catering in a four star hotel at Paphos starts at £1,700 for the three of us so we effectively paid £800 extra for a luxury air conditioned detached house with it's own pool than we would have done for a single room in a hotel

Paphos or Coral Bay might be ideal for the threadstarter

For those that think of villa holidays as being too expensive we spent the Christmas fortnight in Playa Blanca, Lanzarote and our three bedroomed villa cost me £900 for the fortnight with an additional £850 for the flights for us. That was actually cheaper than staying in the four star hotels there over Christmas.

I did a Google search, results here, for hotels that are near Villa Park.
You must be a big fan, wanting to go on an Aston Villa holiday!

No as they will be adding their huge margin on to the price. Look at the two websites that I mentioned as there will be a huge variety there

I'd find a site where the owners themselves advertise. You get a more personal service. Who knows what the travel agents add on?

That's a problem that I'm currently wrestling with. I rather fancy Sardinia this year but it's twice as expensive as Cyprus

But then you don't share the pool with obese tattooed chavs and their kids who use it as a public toilet.

We stopped here 2 yrs ago, its on the quieter north east coast of Corfu James Villa Holidays-Tassos, Kerasia, Corfu

Very nice place & walking distance between 2 villages each with beach/tavernas and a couple of shops. Boat taxis available to nearby tavernas.

Its worth waiting for deals with James Villas - but you then risk not getting the one you want.

You may want to factor in the price of a couple of cars too if you want to get around and about

well luckily two of the members of the group would be confident drivers abroad, one thing i'd like to ask only one of us has ever been on villa holiday before how is security? its easy to get worried looking around the web at horror stories from reviews saying first night robbed, safe ripped from wall etc?? how secure are these villas?

Most villas are fairly secure and many also have safes in them too. The feeling in the places that we normally go to is that there is far less risk of burglary than there is back in the UK.

The higher profile places like Benidorm have a far higher crime rate than the more family oriented resorts

It can be a bit nerve racking at first if you've never driven abroad before but the traffic is nothing like UK traffic as it's more like a rural village

just to update, after a lot of debating we finally got a villa book. last week of July for seven days into first week of August in Gale region in the Algarve, booked everything through James Villas, checked prices for flights and car hire seperatley but it wasn't working out any cheaper.

I wonder if it's the same villa that I booked through James Villas two summers ago :D

I like Gale as it's one of my favourite parts of the Algarve to stay in. The beach is probably only a short walk away and never gets really crowded and even in high summer you can get seated in the three or four beachside restaurants fairly easily.

Whilst it's fairly quiet and family orientated it is only a few miles from Albufeira which is a bit more lively if that's your thing

    Its this Villa; http://www.jamesvillas.co.uk/villa....547932787&vsearch=yes&CTA=search_villa_button

I think we spent several hours yesterday as a group reading the short descriptions of every area in Algarve and Gale seemed like the ideal choice. Having the car will mean we're able to explore. I already see from Albufeira tourist site that there is plenty to do in the region, a water park, go karting track, quad bike tours etc. . .

If you can think of any places we should try let me know, looking forward to some sun are original plan was 10-14 days but some people couldn't get enough time of work so hopefully 7 days will be great.

I don't really like the overcrowded tourist spots so I avoid both Albufeira and Armacao de Pera but of course others may feel different.

Lagos is a nice town and we stayed there in a villa also called Cabrita. It's a little "posher" than Albufeira with a lovely centre full of restaurants and cafes. Half way between Gale and Lagos is Carvoeiro which is a fishing village with some nice coves with sandy beaches and also good reastaurants.

If you like fish there is a superb beachside fish restaurant in Gale and I can "fish" out the name for you if you like that sort of thing.
