I've calculated that for a 51" (Toshiba rear-pro) screen in my living room the surface of my eyeballs would be seven feet from the screen surface.

This is a bit close for every day viewing, however I don't watch much TV casually, and the TV is meant to be an alternative to a front projector for watching movies and a couple of hours a week sport. Front projector guidelines are that twice the screen width is about the optimum distance - I will be five inches inside that limit.

Anyone think I'm fooling myself with these arguments and would be better off going for a smaller set?

I'd say a 42 or 44 would be more pleasurable to watch at that sort of distance. Still plenty big enough for an immersive experience.

The viewing angle for a 42" at 7ft is 24.5 degrees, which is the same angle as a 51" at 8.5ft.
