I was told that a good viewing distance for a 42" plasm is 20 foot onwards is this true?
As i'm thinking of getting a 42" plasma but i think i'll only be 15 foot at the most away or a little less.

Don't want bad eyes from watching it all the time

8ft is the recomended minimum, take no notice.
Although poor screens do look better at 20 ft :smashin:

If I was going to be 20 foot away, I'd be looking for something bigger than 42" :).

Mine looks fine from 10 - 12 foot away.

I am pretty much set on getting a 42 inch plasma screen in the very near future (once all the associated costs of house buying have been dealt with!). The principle reason behind this is that I have very poor eyesight even with glasses and so always sit very near the telly. Currently I have a 28 inch (can't remember the make just now) which I have to be within 3 feet of to fully appreciate picture detail. My thinking is with a bigger screen I won't have to sit so close and picture quality will be (for me) consequently improved. However, I doubt I will be able to view as far away as 8 feet, so is it worthwhile shelling out the thick end of 2 grand for the new set?

Oh yes, and I'm new by the way!

If you are a maximum of 8 feet i would think a 37" would suit better.

Our viewing ranges from 6 to 12 feet so i have gone for a 42".

We had a 37 inch panny at 8ft and it was fine, before that we were watching a 14" lcd, then a 26" panny lcd and then a 32" panny lcd at the same distance.

Now we have a 42pv500 (dont flame me!) and sit anywhere between 6ft and 9ft and its all good!

The method I use for viewing distance is to move slowly towards the screen until I can see the pixels in the picture, then back off a few inches at a time until I can't. Voila, the perfect viewing distance :D Works for me anyway, and puts me about 6 feet away from my 42" panny.

I agree. I watch a 6ft projector screen from 15ft away. I've been thinking about getting a plasma to replace my TV but I've got a feeling I'm going to be squinting looking at a 42" tv from 15ft away. 50" seem to be over double the price of 42" sets which is a bit of a bummer.

as someone said earlier it really depends on how good the plasma and source material are!

i dont have a big room at all so have to sit about 6 feet away from my 50" plasma but picture wise its excellent!! Though i walked through many a TV shop and seen many screens look terrible at pretty much any distance!

Best to get a viewing and see!!

I sit between 7ft-9ft away and on digital sources this is fine for mine, but if i come closer than that it does seem to be worse. With dvd though 6-7ft is fine.Pw6 by the way.Though if i have to use analogue though i sit in the other room :rotfl: Just joking, that isnt even that bad......from 10ft away.

Surely viewing distance mainly depends on how good the viewer's vision is. If you have poorer vision you can sit much closer to a screen before you start seeing pixels and more artefacts than someone with very good vision.

I sit about 8 feet away from my 42" PWD6 and it's brilliant.

I remember reading from previous correspondence (and looking at shop displays), that you can sit a lot closer to the screen, if it is HD - where you can sit as close as 4 - 5 feet away. With an SD screen you would be able to see the individual 'pixels' from that distance.

With my PV500, you could sit 4 feet with HD material and get away with it, on normal stuff over 6-8 feet you should be OK

In my lounge (20ft) I have a 56inch tosh rear projection and that feels about right for that kind of distance...

Probably average, certainly good enough for driving but not perfect. However, I can't fault my PWD6 for DVD's even compared to my 32" CRT which was a good quality Loewe. I really think it is a good picture from eight feet away. However, poor sources such as digital cable do look worse on the bigger screen because the artefacts are magnified. But I'm willing to put up with reduced quality TV viewing for brilliant DVD viewing.

    Bonjour,

I have been reading your forums quite often for the past few weeks.
I'd like to buy a new PIO 6G, but not sure if i should go for the 43' or 50'?

I'm changing quite a lot of things in my house, one of them is a new
    open plan kitchen/living room.
From my sofa I'm 6 foot away
From my breakfast bar 12.5 foot away
From my dining table(small) 12.5 foot away

    43' or 50' ?

I don't know anything about plasmas so sorry if it sounds stupid !
I've heard that if too close it's quite untidy.

Thx and sorry for my english I'm french

    Happy viewing !!!

    Nico

Bonjour nicosnoko and welcome to the forums. Poor English , you must be joking - you should see the way some of the 'natives' one here write :D.

I would say that the 50" is too big to be watched comfortably from your sofa, but would be fine from the other locations. The 42/43" would be a good compromise and be fine from ant location. Would leave you more Euro to spend on other things too :smashin:
