      Thank you Steve

In a world monopolised by oled, i must confess that I am interested by the xe93

If they worked on the build quality and light dispersion, the booster TV capability is interesting if price is right. Funny bit is that I am embarrassed a bit to make this statement vs oled but I like lots of things about it.

@Steve Withers, did you had a chance to demo in person? The brightness and contrast are improved ? Thanks

Any impressions from the massive CLEDIS screen they have on display? Sony have shown this off a few times over the last year wondering when it might come to consumers. It potentially could be a game changer!
Watching the vid and the blooming in the black bars especially on the tv to the left is not a good sign. The angle and camera probably aren't helping the matter though.

It's exciting to see the X1 Extreme filter down into the 93 range. Looking forward to a future review in a few months time.

Glad I am not the only one excited by that
The last year xd93 was already good so this year one looks very complete. Just hope price is good.

It's definitely on my short list to examine in the months ahead. Pending this year's OLED offerings and prices I may still be swayed by something like the XE93 if in the end I felt the want to make a lest costly and shorter term investment with a view to buying another TV in 2 to 3yrs rather than 5. I can't ever imagine owning another TV and having it last as long as 10yrs as my outgoing set has. It was so much easier ten years ago when standards and new features in TVs were not in a constant state of flux. Is the picture good and does it have HDMI were about the hight of concerns in 2007. :) Now it's is the picture good? Why type of HDMI does it have, does it do HDR? How many types of HDR? What kind of smart functions does it have? Can it shine my shoes? ...etc

I'm going to be coming from a Pioneer KURO to whatever TV I buy next. Where I can catch edge lit LEDs out is in owning a large number of black and white films, and a large number of subtitled films. For the former, obviously black levels and near black levels are of importance to me although I value the benefit of bias lighting and I keep realistic expectations when it comes to such things and LED panels. As far as the latter goes, subtitles can often draw my attention to blooming and halos so it'll be interesting to see how much of a minimum Sony can keep that kind of thing down to here. At 75" the FALD XE94 will be too costly for my liking, and besides I think I'd sooner consider the 65" Z9 given its greater number of dimming zones.

As I wrote in the Sony OLED thread, the factors of performance, price, features and screen size are all things I need to weigh up on balance. I'm always grateful to forums and news resources like AV Forums and the guidance we can get here (I've been reading this forum for many, many years despite only posting in the last twelve months).

@SceneMissing thank you for your post and pragmatism.
I was feeling bad to ignore the oled but like you, I want to consider this offering based on quality and value.

Strangely, I was thinking the same, last TV has more than 10 years. Can't afford 2-3 years but changing TV (or just migrating previous one to my son, more likely) within 3-5 years is really appealing to me. This also tally with my early analysis that things will mature by 2020 onward

Bottom line, if differential in price is significant with Sony oled and performance of the led good enough, then I will be tempted. I also prefer this design much better than oled especially stand

I held off getting a TV last year because I felt the bigger TV's had too many flaws or missing features.

This year looks like the year to jump in and I'm focusing on the +70" TV's with the XE94 near the top of the list.

One big concern was support for all the HDR formats so I'm glad Sony are going to support Dolby Vision, very curious about the update, I thought Dolby was a system on a chip.

Looking forward to this and reviews of the Hisense, and LG's offerings. It's a pity Panasonic are limiting themselves to the 65" OLED panels.

Slim Backlight Drive+ zone count would be interesting to know.

The description makes it sound like on one dimension, the maximum is 4 "rows" (top and bottom, dual layer light guide for both), while the other dimension depends on the number of LED columns used in the TV. So it could be 8x4, 12x4, even 16x4.

On the featured image above this article you can already see the backlight bleeding blobs. I could only imagine how bad this 'll be in a dim room. No thanks Sony, not for me.

I did see the XE93 in person and I thought it looked really good but it's hard to tell how different it was to the XD93 on a show floor with no ability to compare.

Well it's currently only aimed at the professional market but it looked amazing, if they could make consumer versions at sensible prices it would be a game changer.

Never ever judge from a picture or a video. I don't believe one second this top set is producing picture like in the video. I posted them just for the comments, have a glimpse of contrast and nits plus build/design.
I am not a fanboy but something tells me that this set is to watch this year.

Prices will probably be higher do to lower £ best to wait for 6 months when prices always drop, Lowest price I have found is always at Costco, however they only appear a couple months later than JL etc.

You are right but will be interesting to see how positioning with oled will be as prices expected to drop this year
They can't price it too close to oled prices but time will tell

I wasn't referring to your post, but the main item photo. You can clearly see the light glows all over the place. I know this photo is shot from an angle, but the uniformity is just horrible. A lot of people I know are unhappy with their 2016 Sony TV's, from the SD85xx series up to the high end ZD9. 2017 will be no difference so it seems.

I noticed that too, but bear in mind most TVs on display at these shows are maxed out to vivid modes...etc, so any trappings inherent to LED and edge lighting may look exaggerated.

If to Steve's eyes it looked promising, and John from Forbes seemed to like what he saw initially more than the 2016 models, then it's encouraging, but until a review set is in Steve's hands and calibrated, and sets are in the hands of owners, we won't truly know how the performance holds up.

Not taken personally and noticed it too
I am just being patient as on paper, the improvement are quite drastic
It will all depend on price and performance plus reviews
      and ultimately my eyes...
15 mins in front of this baby and oled brothers and I will know :)

      I will go first :
      1. at launch in uk for 55 in pounds
      Oled 2499-2600
      LCD 1800-2000
      2. Within 6 months with promotion
      Oled 2000
      LCD 1500

There are rumours that Sony oled will hit 2000 euros at launch which means it can go as low as £1700 if agressive price war and led expected to then hit £1200?
All depends how strong lg start this year to shift volume

It was just a quick tweet the other day, that he always considered the 93D disappointing and that the new one looks better. Again, we'll have nothing to properly gauge until sets are in the hands of reviewers in a few months really.
