Having had numnerous problems trying to save a huge 16:9 AVI file (From a DV Camcorder) as something small & 16:9 on my PC, are there some formats of file that will not allow a widescreen image.

The raw AVI file from the camera was 10.2Gb, in medias player this is what was shown in the videos properties; 720*576, 4:3 actual, 16:9 displayed, 29Mbps

I manged to get this down to 630Mb using a DIVx5.1.1 codec which gave me 640*480 and still kept the aspect ratio of the image.

Eventually I got a wmv file that was 4:3 overall, but still kept the aspect ratio of the video in the centre correct.

Trying to get it into a wmv file was only achived in Movie Maker having used the Divx file as the source, everything crashed whenever i tried using the 10Gb file as the source!

Before that it would turn the image into a verticaly stretched 4:3 image.

What parameters decide the picture shape etc. of the file
Are there any guidelines etc. as to what formats are compatible with 16:9

    Thanks
