ezDVD in australia have the video essentials disk for AUD $39 that works out abot £12/13 so I'm considering buying it.

However disks like Panet of the Apes (2001) has a THX setup optimisation option.

Is this just as good or should I get the VE disk.

    I've a vw10HT and THX amp/speakers

The VE disk is excellent however digital video essentials is due out shortly info is here

It is significantly better than THX optimode and either VE or AVIA are essential to really get the best out of your system.

    Hi,

is this the thing to buy when you're new to AV ?
does anyone have other suggestions - books, sites,... ?

I just want to avoid asking the same old "stupid" questions again on this forum :)

I have both disks mentioned above.

The ultimate platinum is good, if you don't need the overscan display.Otherwise avia is excellent.

I was under the impression the new avia disk was primarily(but not totally) designed for HDTV,which obviously is not a lot of good for most of us.
