Video conversion/playback for iPad 3

Hi,

I've searched the forum and not really found the answers i'm looking for, so ...

I have recently purchased my first iPad and was hoping to transfer some movies onto it for my daughter to watch. I want to convert some existing DVDs and also convert some .ts files that currently reside on my freesat box.

My questions are :-

1. Is there a single utility that will take either .ts or DVDs as input?
2. What is the best format to use (.mp4, .m4v etc) to ensure that i can take advantage of hardware accelation?
3. Is the built-in video player on the ipad okay or should i use something line AVPlayerHD?

As an aside, can anyone recommend a good tool for stripping adverts etc out of .ts files?

Thanks,

Matt

Thanks for the info but i am not a mac user - apologies for not indicating this in the original post. Converstion software would need to run on Vista or Windows 7 (and ideally be free).

Thanks,

Matt
