video backup / macrovision cable - this is odd?

When I got my panny 5100h from www.techtronics.com (where on earth has their website gone btw?), I also got a video backup cable to (honestly!) put some of the kids vids onto dvd and put the vids in the loft...

Anyway, only just got to installing it but have noticed something odd...

Before installing it, attempting to record movies on NTL pay-per-view displayed a "cannot record" on the dvd recorder. I recently experimented ot see if this would still be the case - but now it does record from the SCART line-1 input (coming from the ntl box via my amp). However, what's odd is that I can also record from the coax signal pass-thru (ie channel 6 on the dvdr tuner) as well as from the SCART signal passing thru the amp.

How does a SCART lead from the NTL box effect the coax signal coming out of it and feeding into the dvdr. I'd have thought I'd be able to record from the SCART but NOT from the coax???

Is my naivity in this whole are showing itself again ?
