    Hello,
I've been using a budget Sherwood amp that I bought 25 years ago but due to a house refurbishment and am looking to move it to a bedroom and buy a replacement main amp for the dining room. Money is tight - I could probably stretch to around £100 so am looking on ebay. When I bought my first system a friend had a NAD 3020i and I reckon I could find one in budget on ebay. So my question is, would I be better off trying to get a newer amp, perhaps something from Cambridge audio, or a Rotel ra-01? The speakers are Eltax monitor iii (probably 15 years old) that will be wall mounted and the source will be a spotify subscription through a chromecast audio. Thanks.

This will drive your Monitor 3s with gusto and with plenty to spare

It’s a solid amp with plenty of reserve power, and it’ll handle any reasonable speaker upgrade you might try in the future.

No remote with it, but you’ll find on one eBay cheaply enough should you want one.

If you need to make it on a tighter budget then either of these two will also happily drive the Eltax speakers. No remote, and they haven’t the power or headroom of the 550A but they’re still a great amp and a bargain too.

Or this one. Slightly older but plenty of grunt and another solid amp.

Ps, I bought my then 7 year old nephew a pair of those speakers and a nad amp years ago.

He loved it. Plenty of fun and volume was had by all.

His parents hated me, but he had it for 8 years so I have a soft spot for the Monitor 3s

Thanks for all the help. Much to think about. I like the look of the Cambridge Azur 550. No-one has mentioned the NAD 3020i - that's the nostalgia choice as the amp I really wanted 25 years ago but does it just not make sense against modern rivals?

The 550 is a solid, powerful amp. All you’ll need.

The Nad 2020 is pobably still a decentish amp.

But at that age, it’s going to be out of spec most likely, bias drift and probably capacitors will need to be looked at.8

I had one of these many years ago. Pretty sure it was a step or two up from a 3020 but I could be way off the mark saying that. I liked it as far as I remember but I blew a channel (or at least it stopped working on one channel) and I used that as a poor excuse to go out and buy a whole new set up!

I’m pretty sure that’s the one I got for my nephew too.

But as I said, it was a good number of years ago and they are getting old now. Great amp though.

Also, if I was spending the £130, I’d go for one of the newer BEEs. All round more modern power supply set up and newer too.

The one linked to by Ugg10 above looks like a good buy if you’re set on a Nad. As with the 550, plenty of power and headroom.
