Im watching some AVI files using my Video - the first where very good but just come across two which have very, very low dialouge

Its strange as these are actually bigger files than the first that I watched and seem more dynamic - almost as if 5.1 but the speach is just so hard to hear

    what could the problem be

Do you know how the audio is encoded - is it mp3 or Ac3?
If its Ac3 try upgrading the ac3 codec, you may also be able to amplify the voulme within the codec settings.

Just got hold of some AVI files which are said to be in 5.1 surround sound

However they dont play as such under MCE - just detected as 2Ch by the amp

    Can this be solved

AC3 can also be 2 channel, have you tried G Spot to identify exactly how the file is encoded?

Blimey - note to self careful on results when you google gspot

Anyway - the file in question is listed as

    ac3 - 448kbs (6ch)

but only shows as 2CH when playing

    What am I missing
