hi, I've seen some ex-demos Velodyne subs going cheap! - well, I hope they'd make a better sound than that, but anyway they're -

    Velodyne CHT-8 @ 199 quid
    and
    Velodyne VX-10 @ 149 quid...

which one is better, and are they good enough to go with what I've got..??

unless someone can show me a better bargain around the same price..!

These are discontinued models. The VX-10 used to sell at £200 in our Powerbuys 18 months ago and many people bought them as first time budget subs. I would guess that you wouldn't be able to find anything else brand new at that price that would be better although an ex demo Mordaunt Short MS309 would be preferable.

I don't know anything about the CHT-8. We used to sell the CHT-10 with the bigger driver in the Powerbuys and they were popular but £199 is only £20 short of a brand new MS 309 which I would buy in preference.

I had the vx10 and was quite impressed with it.The only thing that let it down was the auto on/off, a little bit lazy.Easyly solved by uping the signal from the amp and using a splitter.

cheers - in fact - I'm obviously going to look at other alternatives too...

    my room isn't to big - about 5mtr * 5mtr....

and my budget isn't that big, around 250 ish, tho, I could stretch a bit more if the right one comes along..!!

    any recomendations..?

I know you mentioned the MS 309 (Ian J), but in this months what(s) hifi, they recommend the wharfedale (?) that cost 250 quid...but they do categorise it as a budget sub tho...what are your views on that..?

    cheers!

edit - I want a musical sub - to plug into my nad whilst listening to cds...

    That does sound painfull.

I'm afraid that I haven't heard the Wharfedale so can't comment but if you are willing to buy second hand you may get an early REL Strata or Storm which should suit you down to the ground and would be infinitely better than what you have at the moment.

I can happily recommend the MS 309 to you as a good first sub that easily holds itself with music and films. Can be had for approx £215 in most finnishes except black (at the moment).

unfortunately it'll be my 3rd sub!! I've had 2 eltax's - and I want a substantial upgrade (in terms of quality) to what I have now...
tho, I'm fairly happy with my sub (nothing else to compare it with!), I'm just in the slow process of upgrading my speakers...

You will definitely notice a difference when comparing to the Eltax.

My first proper sub (after I gave my Videologic Digitheatre DTS to my brother) was an Eltax Sub 10. It had two modes, boom and quiet. It wasn't too bad with movies, but I noticed how different a good sub can sound when I upgraded to the KEF PSW2500 earlier in the year. Now, I've just sold the KEF PSW2500 and bought an SVS PC Ultra, which is awesome!! One of the best subwoofers I have heard!!

The MS309 will be a big jump in quality bass from the Eltax subs you have, you might be astonished at how much of an improvement you will get.
