    As usual answer depends...
Is it from a shop or mail order ?
Is it brand new unopened stock ?
It is a very well built machine with a good specification, it is not part of Panasonic's new range, I would pay £199 for brand new unopened stock from a shop, otherwise £150 would be more to my liking.

TiVo can record subtitles once the automatic software update has been done!(normally within 2-3 days of setting up)
All you need to do is record a program as normal, and when playing back go to text page 888 to display subtitles. If somebody else watches the program and does not want/need subtitles then they are not automattically displayed (best of both worlds!).
TiVo can be purchased for as little as £150 plus £10 per month or 1 off £200 lifetime sub. The sub pays for software updates and TV listings (EPG).

If for some reason you can't get one from Comet then try NTL as they are selling them at (IIRC) £200

I have the NV-FJ710 its a great VCR, full of wonderful functions. I think £199 might be a tad high though, I believe mine was around £180 when I was given it in Jan.

Also would I be right in assuming these Tivo's require a subscription of some sort?

Yes, a Tivo subscription is presently £10 per month, this could increase, decrease or stop....or stay the same indefinitely.
You could buy a one-off Lifetime subscription for £200.

Yes it does require a subscription, but that works out at £300 for a unit that is far superior to any VHS machine. And with the benefits of never needing to find space on a tape and never needing to buy a TV listings mag etc. etc. etc........:)
