Hello everyone.

The girlfriends grandmother has a load of vinyl that she wants rid of. Could anyone give me an idea of what its worth or where I could go to get a valuation for them. Ideally she wants to sell them as a job lot but can separate if needed.
I know some will not be worth much but its worth a shot.

Tbh. I'd separate out the considerable amount of chaff from the wheat. Well known stuff like Oldfield will sell, but not for much unless it's in good nick and an early pressing. But MOR stuff like mad max bygraves, top of the pops etc is just charity shop fodder. Even there it doesn't move! I would put the stuff like Queen, Oldfield, Adam Ant etc on ebay. The only two I could pick out is the Beatles double, if it's the 'blue album' in good condition that might fetch a decent price, and buddy holly rave on. If the latter's an original, I would look at one of the price guides like:-

http://www.rarerecordpriceguide.com/

The rest, no insult intended, in particular as it's for your grandmother, is for the charity shops.

The jeff wayne war of the worlds, if its in mint condition and still has the book with all the artwork, you,d probably get 20 pounds for it.

Besides the ones overkill mentions, the rest of the various artists and top of the pops stuff might shift on a good day for about 10p each.

It would have to be a very good day! ;)

For vinyl, I imagine you'll get £15 per record on eBay. But I don't really know much about price and stuff. Long arse list though!

'God bless our union jack, Billy Carroll and the loyal orange men 1970: Working, good condition.'

some folk were I live would gladly take this off you

most of it will be for the charity shop I think. separate it out as best you can, then try sell on ebay or gumtree

Big terror movie themes, I have that on vinyl, just re bought it on iTunes.

When you say "working" does that mean you listened to them all? Good grief!
You may have to search on ebay for each title, to see what price is being asked. That doesn't mean you will get that price, but one man's junk is another man's collectors item!
Good luck!

The pink floyd could be worth something. But this depends on the pressing, mint condition of both sleeve and vinyl.

A mint condition 1st pressing would be worth quite a lot.

So you also need to find out the pressing etc of each album.

Common sense should immediately tell you which ones could be worth something.

The top of the pops albums aren't even the original artists.

Ironically top of the pops were done by better artists, Elton John did well

You're joking!

The vast majority of titles on that list are charity shop fodder and as @overkill said, worth about 10p apiece on a good day.

Forget eBay as a barometer of vinyl value. The vast majority of listings on there are totally divorced from reality as regards prices. For example there's a first pressing of 'Dark Side of the Moon' currently listed on eBay at over £1,800. :rotfl: :D:rotfl::D More like £80. here in the real world.

Of much more use is Record Collector Magazine's, Rare Record Price Guide. A massive volume which has always been and remains the Bible for record collectors and vendors.

Currently in it's 2022 incarnation.

The only second hand vinyl I'd buy is stuff I couldn't find anywhere else and is something I must have. That would mean albums I don't have by the likes of Gil Evans and Annette Peacock. They are totally absent from that list. The Top Of The Pops albums maybe fun for some but I can't see anyone paying real money for them.

Nah mate, don't underestimate the power of Vinyl. It's made a huge comeback and is ready.

I am a music collector as well as having worked in the record business for many years, so I'm well aware of the collectors' market and the worth of certain titles on vinyl.

I'm also aware of the worthlessness of certain titles and that includes the vast majority of what is on that list.

As @overkill, @andy1249 and myself have all pointed out, the majority on that list is charity shop fodder - 10p on a good day.

I accept that some will be worth less than others but you're mistaken if you think 10p...these vinyl are like treasure. People will get the crappiest, least appreciate works on vinyl because it's rare and vintage. It is what it is.

"People will get the crappiest, least appreciate works on vinyl because it's rare and vintage. It is what it is."

And what do you base that assertion on? Have you worked in the record trade? Been a dealer at collectors' fairs or any other collecting arena? Bought and/or sold vinyl in the collectors' market?

And weren't you the one that stated a few posts back...

"But I don't really know much about price and stuff."

But now you're giving an argument to someone with considerable experience as a dealer in the collecting field, both as a buyer and seller, who is backing up what others on the thread have also said.

Yes, I'm sure 'Lennon & McCartney Tijuana Style', 'Max Bygraves Presents Wonderland of Sound', 'Brotherhood of Man Sing 20 Number One Hits', 'not to mention all of those highly desirable 'Top of the Pops' albums will have the music lovers fighting like cats and dogs to get at them. :rotfl::laugh::rotfl::laugh:

There are a few -a very few- albums on that list that would fetch a few pounds depending on condition and pressings, but the vast majority is the type of dross that lands in every charity shop in the country where they will never move, at any price, even at 10p.

When I've had a stall at record fairs/markets, I always get approached by people with armfuls of LPs looking to sell them and like you, under the mistaken impression that if it's vinyl, it must be rare and valuable. The majority that I'm offered is like the majority on that list, absolute dross that I or any other dealer wouldn't touch with a bargepole.

Everyone wants to buy original vinyl of The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, etc, but they only seem to want to sell worthless crap like most of the stuff on that list.

"But I don't really know much about price and stuff."

As you have proven with every subsequent post.

Ironically top of the pops were done by better artists, Elton John did well
Ironically they weren't.

Are you seriously suggesting that the anonymous individuals that covered tracks by The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Frank Sinatra, David Bowie, etc, on these albums, were better than the originals?

...and buddy holly rave on. If the latter's an original, I would look at one of the price guides like:-

Rare Record Price Guide

The rest, no insult intended, in particular as it's for your grandmother, is for the charity shops.
No, 'Rave On' was a cheapo '70s compilation from Music For Pleasure. One on eBay at the minute priced at £4.30p.

Holly only released three original albums in his lifetime 'The Chirping Crickets', 'That'll Be The Day' and 'Buddy Holly'.

Every other album released since those have been compilations.

When I was working in the record business I lost count of the number of Buddy Holly compilations that came out.

Hence I suggested checking the price guides. :D Likewise with the buddy holly comps. I think we had about five or six different ones at one shop, and then about six or seven different ones at the other outlet I worked in. Probably all different to the ones in the first shop! There seems to be no end to Buddy Holly, Elvis, 'Rock n Roll' in general compilations, often running alongside TV ad campaigns.
